어린이 그림책 분야에서 21세기의 대표작가로 자리를 굳힌 모 윌렘스의 Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!와 Knuffle Bunny에 이은 2008년도 Caldecott 수상작입니다.
2005년 Caldecott 수상작 Knuffle Bunny의 후속 작품이며, 이 책에서는 성장한 트릭시가 유치원에 가서 겪은 일을 담았습니다. 전편과 마찬가지로 흑백의 실사 사진을 배경으로 그 위에 카툰 그림을 입힌 독특한 스타일로 그려낸 작품입니다.
트릭시는 아빠와 함께 손을 잡고 부지런히 학교를 향해 걸어갑니다. 이 세상에 단 하나뿐인 꼬마 토끼 인형을 친구들에게 자랑할 생각에 트릭시의 마음은 잔뜩 부풀어 있었지요.(아마도 학교의 Show-and-Tell 행사인듯...) 드디어 학교에 도착한 트릭시가 아빠에게 작별인사를 할 때, 눈에 딱 뜨인 것은.... 자기 인형과 똑같이 생긴 토끼인형을 소냐가 가지고 있는 게 아니겠어요?(토끼인형도 놀랐는지 말 그대로 놀란 토끼눈이 되었네요.) 트릭시는 이때부터 소냐와 으르렁거리기 시작하고, 그러다 선생님에게 토끼인형들을 압수당하게 됩니다.
학교 수업이 끝나고 토끼 인형을 돌려 받은 후 트릭시는 오후시간과 저녁시간을 그럭저럭 보내고 잠자리에 듭니다.(침대 위에는 같은 작가의 Leonardo the Terrible Monster책에 나오는 바로 그 무섭지 않은 괴물인형이 놓여 있네요.)
저녁 8시 30분에 잠이 들어서 뒤척거리며 잠을 자다가 밤 2시가 되었을 때 트릭시는 갑자기 무엇인가를 깨닫고는 눈을 번쩍 뜹니다. 그제서야 자기 인형과 소냐 인형이 바뀌게 된 것을 깨닫게 된 것입니다. (소냐 인형은 머리에 조그만 리본이 달려 있습니다.) 그리고는 새벽 2시 30분에 곤하게 자는 엄마 아빠를 깨워서 이 인형이 자기 것이 아니라고 하네요. 아빠는 "내일 아침에 해결하면 안될까"라고 말을 꺼냈다가 딸과 엄마 눈총에 본전도 못찾고는 소냐네 집에 전화를 걸려고 전화기로 갑니다. 그때 전화벨이 울리고, 소냐 아빠는 커다란 목소리로 "We have your bunny"라고 말하네요. 그리고 즉석에서 만날 약속을 잡고는 트릭시와 아빠는 부리나케 약속장소로 달려갑니다. 한 밤중에 약속 장소에서 만난 트릭시네와 소냐네 아빠들은 토끼인형을 교환하고, 소냐와 트릭시는 미안해서인지 아빠 등 뒤에 숨어 있네요. 자기 인형을 되찾게 된 트릭시와 소냐의 얼굴에는 안도와 행복의 미소가 번지고, 둘은 이 일을 계기로 가장 친한 단짝이 됩니다...

전체 그림과 줄거리도 재미있고, 아이들과 인형들의 표정변화도 재미있으며, 그림과 사진 속의 숨어 있는 재미거리 역시 가득한 책입니다. (예를 들면, 트릭시가 소냐 토끼를 처음 봤을 때 누워 있던 트릭시 토끼인형의 귀가 쫑긋하게 서는 모습. love라는 글자 밑에서 으르렁거리는 트릭시와 소냐. 아이들은 토끼인형을 안고 다니는데 선생님은 매정하게 귀를 움켜쥐고 가는 모습. 이를 바라보는 아이들의 놀라고 걱정하는 표정 등등...)

Book Description
Trixie can't wait to bring her one-of-a-kind Knuffle Bunny to school and show him off to everyone. But when she gets there, she sees something awful: Sonja has the same bunny. Suddenly, Knuffle Bunny doesn't seem so one-of-a-kind anymore. Chaos ensues until the bunnies are taken away by Ms. Greengrove. After school, Trixie finally gets her beloved bunny back. But in the middle of the night, Trixie realizes something. She has the wrong bunny! Daddy comes to the rescue again as a midnight swap is arranged with the other bunny, the other little girl, and the other daddy. Needless to say, the daddies are not very happy. By the end of the story Trixie has her beloved bunny back, but she has also gained something new: her very first best friend. In the tradition of the Caldecott Honor-winner KNUFFLE BUNNY: A CAUTIONARY TALE, this is another heartfelt, hilarious picture book that children (and their parents) will love.

Knuffle Bunny returns, but this time he has a doppelganger. Trixie is off to school, and things are going well enough - until she notices that Sonja is holding her own Knuffle Bunny. Arrgh! The afternoon results in dueling bunnies, which are confiscated by the teacher. Happily, they are returned at the end of the day, but at 2:30 a.m. realization hits: the bunny Trixie is sleeping with is not her own. Despite parental protestations, phone calls are placed, bunnies are exchanged, and the girls, bonded during the trauma, become best friends. This has much of the charm of Knuffle Bunny (2004), a Caldecott Honor Book, but the premise is stretched here: the middle-of-the-night meeting is energetic, but it seems overplayed. As in the previous title, the slice-of-life artwork is smashing. Willem's cartoon-style art, set against crisp black-and-white photos of New York City interiors and exteriors, catches every bit of the plentiful emotion. Keen-eyed kids will have fun keeping track of the Knuffle Bunny as he's lost, then found again.
