This book will suggest unexpected, unusual and fun color associations for the imaginations of its young readers. The mechanics are simple. Each sturdy page is made of double sheets with a large pull sheet in between. The background color of each of the eight double-spreads is primary, bright, shiny and substantial, with simple cutout shapes filled with the same background color. The effect is total red, total white and so forth. At the bottom of each page there is a nice big pull-tab with an arrow pointing down; when it is pulled, the many cutout shapes on each right-hand page reveal pictures of objects in the color of the page. There are red ants, green peas in a pod, white objects in a white refrigerator and a cat with a black shadow. On the left side, the tab pulls down the name of the color on the page. Most of the pages include several lift-the-flaps, and some of the pull-down openings reveal pictures under pictures as they slide into view. This cleverly designed book with movable parts consists of wordless double-page spreads in startlingly bright hues. Readers pull down a tab with an arrow on the left-hand page to reveal the name of the color in large, black letters. When the tab on the right side is moved, a series of appropriately colored objects slide into windows of different shapes. Each item is labeled in small black print and more examples are hidden behind tabs that can be lifted up. Most of these pictures, done in pen and watercolor, will be easy for young audiences to identify, but some are a bit more of a challenge. For example, the "blue" objects include a cloud-filled sky, a pair of blue jeans, a blue whale, a swimming pool, and a ring with a sapphire stone. Some of the choices used to illustrate "pink" (such as a shrimp, a starfish, and a crab shell) may be too much of a stretch for some readers.
