These lift-the-flap, pull-the-tab books featuring the lovable mouse will surely fly off shelves. Happy Birthday shows Maisy on her special day, receiving cards (note: an envelope opens to reveal a small loose card), dressing for a party, playing games, and enjoying cake. Maisy at the Farm sets the mouse in motion as she rides a horse, drives a tractor, cleans the pigsty, and feeds baby lambs (the milk level in the bottle goes down with the pull of a tab). In both titles, simple illustrations done in primary colors with heavy black outlines add to the appeal. Good for storyhours.

Toddlers can gleefully participate in the festivities in this Maisy (Maisy Goes to Bed, 1990, etc.) adventure. Simple verse details the rituals surrounding a birthday; onlookers see Maisy receive cards in the mail, dress in her special outfit, play hide-and-seek, and, of course, enjoy a boisterous rendition of ``Happy Birthday.'' Incorporating the lyrics of the song into the text encourages children to sing the familiar tune while ``reading'' the story. Cousins's signature style is in full effect; bold colors leap off the white backgrounds, while sturdy pages with easily manipulated pull-tabs and flaps make this party toddler-proof.
