이 책은 색채의 마술사라고 일컬어지는 에릭 칼(Eric carle)의 글이 없는 Wordless Book입니다. 글이 없는 책이라서 생소한 감도 있지만 글이 없기 때문에 아이들의 상상력을 무한대로 키울 수 있는 더 큰 매력을 가지고 있는 책입니다.
책 제목이자 유일하게 있는 한 문장은 "Do you want to be my friend?"뿐 입니다. 친구와 사이좋게 지내야 한다는 것을 배울 수 있는 이 책도 다른 책에서와 마찬가지로 특히 겉장부터 이야기가 시작됩니다. 놓치지 말고 보셔야 합니다.
외로운 생쥐 한 마리가 커다란 코끼리한테 가서 이렇게 말하지요 " Do you want to be my friend?" 그러나 조그마한 생쥐하고 친구가 되겠다고 나서는 동물 친구들은 없었습니다. 생쥐는 포기하지 않고 말, 악어, 사자, 하마, 물개, 원숭이, 공작, 여우, 캥거루, 기린에게 자기와 친구가 되길 원하느냐고 물어보지요 결국 "Yes!"하고 대답한 친구가 있었으니 바로 그 동물은 주인공 쥐와 마찬가지인 생쥐였습니다. 이야기는 여기서 끝나지 않습니다. 스릴감을 주는 부분이 있습니다. 둘은 나무 구멍에 숨어서 이 책의 맨 처음부터 페이지마다 밑에 등장했던 동물의 실체를 보게 됩니다. 바로 뱀입니다. 주인공 생쥐와 새로 사귀게 된 생쥐는 나무 밑 집으로 들어가서 편안하게 쉬게 됩니다.
이 책은 굉장히 재미있는 요소들이 많습니다. Wordless Book라는 점 이외에도 등장하는 동물들을 바로 보여주지 않고, 먼저 동물의 꼬리를 보여준 후 무슨 동물인지를 보는이로 하여금 유추해 볼 수 있게 만들었습니다. 그리고 매 페이지마다 나오는 초록색의 긴 꼬리의 주인공이 끝부분에서 정체를 밝히면서 책의 긴장감을 불어넣고 있는 부분도 이 책의 매력이라고 할 수 있습니다.

Children's Literature
This is an oversized board book with very sturdy pages. Carle's trademark collages really stand out on the shiny white pages of this new edition of his almost wordless story. Little mouse asks several creatures if they want to be his friend, and when he finally meets another mouse, he finds a friend. Watch for the snake in the grass.
