In this lift-the-flap picture book Spot is playing hide-and-seek with the animal friends attending his birthday party. The cute little tan dog with brown spots, who is wearing a crown on his special day, finds alligator under a rug, bear (eating party food) behind a curtain, snake in the china cupboard, hippopotamus in the tub, lion behind a plant, chimpanzee (eating a banana) in a closet, and so forth. Even mama dog Sally plays the game. Sometimes there's a hint about who is in hiding, and each animal has an amusing comment as it is found. Following this game, all the party animals wish Spot a "Happy Birthday!" as he opens his presents. The simple, bright illustrations are entertaining and humorous and young children, will delight in pulling up the sturdy flaps to join in the fun.
The Times Literary Supplement
There is a certain lameness in the supposedly triumphant ending, with Spot being given his presents and simply saying 'Thank you'. Eric Hill's style seems to have become coarser, his colours are harsher and the subject entails an awkward anthropomorphism with Spot hiding his eyes and opening parcels. These are the sort of criticisms that are bound to be levelled at a follow-up to an established classic, but Spot is still lovable and the lift-the-flap formula has some life in it yet.
