벙어리 장갑에 관한 재미있는 이야기그림책(보드북)입니다.
닉키는 할머니 바바가 짜준 눈처럼 흰 벙어리장갑을 들고 밖에 나가 놀다가 그만 한짝을 잃어 버렸어요.
흰 눈 위에 떨어진 하얀 장갑은 사람 눈에는 잘 보이지 않지만, 동물들에게는 매우 신기한 물건으로 보이나 봅니다.
먼저 두더지 한 마리가 흰 벙어리 장갑을 발견하고는 아늑하고 따뜻한 보금자리로 생각하고 들어 갑니다. 얼마 후 토끼도 들어가고, 고슴도치, 부엉이, 오소리, 여우, 커다란 곰까지 비집고 들어갑니다. 조그만 벙어리 장갑이 이제는 많은 동물들에게 추위를 피할 수 있는 보금자리가 된 것이죠.
그 때 조그만 쥐 한 마리가 다가 와서는 커다란 곰의 코 위에 보금자리를 마련하지요. 그런데 들쥐의 가느다란 수염들이 곰의 코를 간지럽혔어요. 곰은 엄청나게 큰 재채기를 하고 동물들과 벙어리 장갑은 사방으로 날아가 버렸지요.
닉키는 곰의 재채기 때문에 하늘로 날아가는 벙어리 장갑을 발견하고는 달려가서 잡습니다. 그런데 벙어리 장갑은 엄청나게 늘어나 있었지요.
우크라이나 민화를 바탕으로 만든 아름답고 서정적인 그림책입니다. 그림 하나하나가 섬세하고 아름답게 묘사되어 있어 마치 명화를 보는 듯합니다.
각 페이지의 좌우에는 벙어리 장갑 모양의 조그만 장식 그림이 있고, 이 그림 속에는 다음페이지의 내용이 들어 있어서, 아이들과 함께 다음에 나올 내용을 맞춰 보는 것도 이 책을 감상하는 또 하나의 즐거움입니다.

When Nicki loses the mitten that his grandmother had knitted for him, the woodland animals find it and crawl inside, each one larger than the last, but as the mitten stretches and grows, grandmother's knitting holds fast, until a tiny mouse proves to be too much.

Baba, Nicki's grandmother, knits pure white mittens for him, even though she is afraid that he will lose them in the snow. Sure enough, the first time Nicki is out, he drops one and some animals promptly move into its snug wool interior. First comes a mole, then a rabbit, a hedgehog, an owl, a badger, a fox, a bear and, finally, a mouse. That mouse tickles the bear's nose and he sneezes, dislodging all of the animals at once. Nicki finds his mitten, and takes it home, but Baba is left to wonder about how it became so enormously stretched out. Brett's magnificent paintings feature her usual array of folk details, and this time, intricate knitting tracks, ornate embroidery, the crusty, peeling texture of the birch bark borders and the exquisite patterns found in Baba's homey rooms. Readers will sit back, suspend belief and welcome this tall tale from the Ukrainian tradition.
