Book Descrition
Flora McDonnell's exuberant salute to our favorite beasts--a gallant dog, two genial ducks, an adoring ewe and her rowdy lamb, and others--captures their characters in large, brilliant portraits. Perfect for sharing with children, I Love Animals is as much fun as visiting a real farm. Full color.

Publisher's Weekly
PW called this colorful, oversized book a "simple and effective introduction to farm denizens [which] also provides an important first lesson about kindness and affection for all animals." Ages 2-up. (Feb.)

Children's Literature
Big, colorful farm animals fill each page of this board book. The text has a little girl stating that she loves whatever creature appears on the page and they range from her dog Jack to a big fat turkey strutting around the farmyard. In between we meet the ducks, a hen, goat, donkey, cow, pig, pony, sheep, and a cat and her kittens. A wonderful book to introduce farm animals and also a strong positive message about loving all creatures. This board book adaptation of the original 1994 book works well. 2001, Candlewick, $6.99. Ages 1 to 4. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

School Library Journal
A charming picture book filled with a small child's joyous love for all the animals on her farm. Large, bold illustrations and a clear text fairly explode with exuberance. Descriptions of ducks ``...waddling to the water,'' hens ``...hopping up and down,'' a goat ``...racing across the field,'' a cow ``...swishing her tail,'' a pony ``...rolling over and over,'' and a turkey ``...strutting around the yard'' convey a sense of bustling activity. The double-page acrylic-and-gouache paintings combined with the simple text make this a perfect choice for sharing with toddler groups.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY

BookList
The stone walls, rolling hills, and pebbled walks of her native Northern Ireland cozily encompass McDonnell's friendly farm, and all the farm animals wear welcoming grins when introduced on succeeding double-page spreads. As the young narrator declares her love for each creature in oversize boldface, McDonnell presents a contented dog waiting to be petted, a happy goat scampering free of its tether across the field, a gargantuan sow delightedly suckling its piglets, and a host of other barnyard residents, all brightly pictured in the acrylic and gouache illustrations. Whether from the city or the country, children will be eager to make the acquaintance of this jovial menagerie.- Ellen Mandel
