어느날 밤, 보슬보슬 솜털로 덮여 있는 귀여운 아기 올빼미 삼남매가 잠에서 깨어납니다. 그런데 엄마 올빼미가 안 보이네요. 엄마 올빼미는 어디로 갔을까요? 안전한 집에서 나와 나무가지에 앉아서 엄마 올빼미를 기다리는 삼남매는 자기들에게 먹일 맛있는 생쥐를 잡아올 것이라고 생각합니다. 그러다 문득 엄마가 여우에게 잡혀 먹히지 않았을까 걱정이 됩니다. 모두 눈을 감고 엄마가 무사히 돌아 오기를 기원하지요. 그러다 마침내 어둠 속의 나무 사이로 커다란 날개를 펴고 소리없이 엄마가 돌아 옵니다. 불안과 두려움이 사라진 올빼미 삼남매는 너무 기뻐서 조그만 날개를 펄럭이며 나무가지 위에서 폴짝폴짝 뜁니다...
이야기 줄거리는 일견 단순해 보이지만 이 책에는 감상할 만한 포인트가 여러가지 있습니다.
1. 제일 먼저 눈여겨 봐야 할 것은 아름다운 그림입니다. 펜과 물감을 사용한 세밀화 그림은 마치 목판화 같은 분위기가 납니다. 검은색과 녹색 톤이 주조를 이루지만, 그림 속의 하얀 올빼미 삼남매들의 행동이나 표정이 너무나도 생동감이 있어서 그림이 단순하다는 느낌이 들지 않습니다. 검은 바탕에 파스텔풍의 문장이 올빼미 삼남매의 그림과 전체적으로 절묘한 조화를 이루고 있습니다.
2. 삼남매의 표정변화도 이 책의 중요한 감상 포인트입니다. 아기 올빼미들의 얼굴에는 오로지 커다란 두눈과 조그만 부리 밖에 없는데도 시시각각으로 변하는 표정들을 생생하게 보여줍니다. 잠에서 깨어나서 엄마가 없는 것을 알았을 때의 놀랍고 근심어린 표정, 나뭇가지에 앉아서 엄마가 돌아오기를 간절히 바라는 표정, 어둠 속에서 갑자기 무서움을 느끼고 나뭇가지 하나로 모여 앉을 때의 표정, 눈을 감고 엄마가 무사히 돌아오기를 간절히 기원하는 표정, 그리고 엄마가 돌아 왔을 때 기쁨이 넘쳐나는 표정, 엄마 품 속에서 안도하고 만족스러워 하는 표정... 놀라움, 기대, 근심, 걱정, 불안, 그리고 마지막의 극적인 반전이라 할 수 있는 환희까지 감정의 변화를 아기 올빼미들의 표정에서 찾아내면서 잔잔한 감동을 느낄 수 있습니다.
3. 삼남매의 역할을 살펴 보는 것도 재미있습니다. 제일 맏이인 큰 언니 사라는 항상 의견을 주도합니다. 엄마는 사냥을 나갔을거다. 엄마는 곧 돌아올거야. 엄마가 맛있는 먹이를 잡아올거야. 엄마가 길을 잃은 것은 아닐까? 등등 언제나 사라는 자신의 의견을 먼저 얘기합니다. 그에 반해 둘째인 남동생 퍼시는 언제나 누나의 의견에 동조하기만 합니다. 언니가 말을 할 때마다 그래 맞아! 나도 그렇게 생각해 하면서 맞장구를 칩니다. 그런데 막내동생 빌은 그저 응석만 부립니다. 큰누나와 형이 무슨 얘기를 하든지 간에 언제나 빌이 하는 말은 오직 한 마디 뿐입니다. "나는 엄마가 보고싶어." 그리고 마지막 페이지의 클로징 멘트도 귀여운 막내 몫이네요. "엄마를 사랑해"
4. 무엇보다도 이 책은 일반적인 그림책들이 주로 다루는 "엄마의 자식 사랑" 보다는 "아기 올빼미들의 엄마 사랑"을 주제로 하여 이야기를 전개합니다. 이를 통해 어린 독자들이 아기올빼미에게 자기 자신을 대입시킴으로써 자기가 엄마를 얼마나 사랑하는지를, 그리고 엄마는 자기에게 어떤 존재인지를 자연스럽게 공감하고 깨닫게 해줍니다.

Three little white owls perch outside their cozy nest, wishing Mother would come home. In Waddell's simple, repetitive, carefully fashioned text, each is unique: Sarah, the largest, makes comforting remarks; Percy seconds them, but doubtfully; while little Bill just keeps saying, "I want my mommy!" Owl Mother does come, of course: "WHAT'S ALL THE FUSS? You knew I'd come back." Benson's soft, wide-eyed birds - rendered in delicate pen strokes touched with gentle color that makes the dramatic, dark night seem appropriately awesome - are perfect stand-ins for wise little toddlers who also know Mom will turn up - but still can't help wondering.

This simple story pales in comparison to the exceptionally well-crafted illustrations. Rendered in black ink and watercolor with an abundance of crosshatching used to show background, shadow, texture, and depth, each stunning woodcutlike panorama fills a double-page spread. Benson has chosen shades of turquoise, pale yellow, and light green for the large-type text in order to avoid detracting from the blue-and-green dominated paintings. Realistic as they appear, the three, fluffy, white baby owls and their mother are infused with distinct personalities. The owlets awaken one night to find their mother gone. Sarah, the largest, reasons that she is out hunting for food. Mid-sized Percy tends to agree, while tiny Bill will only repeat, ``I want my mommy!'' Mom, just out for a night flight, does return, of course, and her fledglings are delighted to see her. The repetition just doesn't work. The plot is too meager, the text too unexciting. Hutchins's Good Night Owl (Macmillan, 1991), Thaler's Owly (HarperCollins, 1982), and Yolen's Owl Moon (Philomel, 1987) are all better stories for preschoolers. Simple, well-written books about mother love and reassurance for this age group are abundant.

New to board book format is Martin Waddell's Owl Babies, in which three worried owlets wait for their mother to return from her night flight. Patrick Benson's disarming cross-hatched pictures of fluffy, wide-eyed owl babies, and the use of light colored text against a black background, turn this sweet story into a hauntingly lovely little book.
