Book Description
When Max sees his new windup toy lobster, he says, No! His big sister, Ruby, makes it go away, but back it comes. Around and around it chases them until it stops on Max, who cries, Again! Rosemary Wells? original four Max books, brought out in 1979, were the first high-quality board books published. Combined with the second four, published in 1985, total sales are over one million! And Mrs. Wells? followers are legion. Now she has completely reillustrated her eight delightful Max board books in her exciting and vibrant full-color style. The highly imaginative stories, loved by millions of young children, are even funnier with the new artwork. These are perfect first books, especially with the increased focus on the importance of reading to babies and toddlers, a cause that Mrs. Wells has been wholeheartedly promoting for several years with her The Most Important 20 Minutes of Your Day reading initiative.
Publishers Weekly
Wells adds engaging new dimensions to her ongoing saga of the inimitable bunny siblings as Ruby introduces Max, her insatiably inquisitive brother, to the tale of a calamitously curious youngster. After a sign tacked to her door (``NO! This means you!'') fails to keep Max out of her room and away from her jewelry box, Ruby decides to deliver a moral to her brother by reading him ``a story about sneaking and peeking.'' The Pandora of Ruby's tale is a bunny whose mother goes off to the store, instructing her not to open the magic jewelry box. The daughter does, of course, and after ``a hundred twister bees, a slew of fire ants, and clouds of Mexican jumping weevils'' fly out, a green spider remains. ``I'm your only hope!'' he says, then proceeds to devour the bugs and save the day. However perfect a role model for Max this lucky Pandora may be, the ending lets readers know that, once again, the endearing fellow chooses not to absorb the lesson Ruby tries to teach. Wells's art (including endpapers filled with amusing Grecian bunnies) is as understated and clever as ever.
Children's Literature
Max gets a wind-up lobster for his birthday, but he doesn't seem too happy about this unusual gift. It starts crawling around the room and sister Ruby tries to make it go away. But the lobster keeps returning and they keep chasing it until it stops right on top of Max. Of course, that ends up being great fun, and he wants to do it all over again. A cheery and all too true scene with bright new drawings by Wells. The series of Max board books includes Max's Bath, Max's Bedtime, Max's Birthday, Max's Breakfast, Max's First Word, Max's New Suit, Max's Ride and Max's Toys.
