Book Description
What will happen when the sheep go trick-or-treating? Could there be wolves lurking in the woods, hoping to catch the sheep as they head home? This lively, funny story is a real treat for fans of this adventuresome flock.
Publishers Weekly
Forget the candy! This year kids can feed on some fun food for thought. Fans of Sheep in a Jeep will welcome the board book edition of Sheep Trick or Treat by Nancy Shaw, illus. by Margot Apple. The woolly heroes emulate youngest enthusiasts, "As the Halloween moon rises,/ Sheep are fixing up disguises." Kids will chortle to see the lambs in ape's clothing and Dracula-like bat wings, and giggle at the "treats" they gather ("Cows offer hay and clover").
Children's Literature
If you are familiar with Sheep in a Jeep or any of the other titles about Shaw's creatures, you know that you are in for a few laughs. These sheep just seem to be drawn to trouble. It is Halloween and that offers some great opportunities for even more craziness. "Spiders give a dried-up fly. / Sheep decide to pass it by./ Sheep stop by the chicken coop. / Chickens give them fresh eggs. Oops!" These six sheep all dressed up in Halloween costumes have a chance to turn the tables on a pack of wolves (some of whom are in sheep's clothing, but that joke might just fly over the heads of the really young audience). However, the party back in their comfy shed is one that all can enjoy.
School Library Journal
These sheep have been in a jeep, on a ship, in a shop, on a hike, and out to eatmaybe it's time they took a rest. Sheep Trick or Treat is just not up to par with the earlier titles. Shaw's familiar rhythm and rhyme are still in evidence as the six prepare costumes and head out trick or treating. They collect goodies from the farm animals ("Spiders give a dried-up fly. Sheep decide to pass it by"). And as one might expect, they are followed by wolves dressed in sheepskins. Apple's illustrations here are somewhat dark and shadowy. The sheep dressed as a vampire on the front cover may actually frighten some children. There is nothing terribly wrong with this book, but it just isn't very interesting. Unless you are badly in need of Halloween books, or have some die-hard fans who must see it, this is not a necessary addition to picture-book collections. These sheep have gone on better romps before.
