Three funny, spirited board books by Leslie Patricelli explore opposites. In BIG Little, heads are BIG, but toes are little. Ladies are BIG but ladybugs are little. Clever pairings, bold graphic art and an expressive toddler in diapers make the concepts fun. The other titles are Quiet Loud ("Crayons are quiet. Pots and pans are LOUD") and Yummy Yucky ("Spaghetti is yummy. Worms are yucky").
Children's Literature
Patricelli has a trio of board books (Big Little, Quiet Loud, and Yummy Yucky) featuring a young diapered lad with one lock spiraling up from the middle of his head. In this particular book, there are a series of comparisons between things that are quiet versus those that are loud. "Fishies are quiet. Doggies are loud." The comparisons are ones that kids would encounter such as snow being quiet while a rainstorm is loud; sniffles are quiet but sneezes are loud; birds are quiet and airplanes are loud. Although the latter is really not exactly true other factors enter into play such as your position relative to the bird or plane. It is eclectic and at times a bit strange in its choice of comparisons.
