Miles is given a saxophone for his birthday but, because of all the noise, his parents ask him to practice outside. He joins up with some fellow musicians to form the Swamp Band. The alligators hire the band for their first gig, and they play at the Alligator Ball. They almost become dinner as well, but Miles outwits the alligators. Much of the text is presented as "dialogue balloons" within the bright, colorful illustrations. The music for the title song is provided at the book's conclusion.
