아빠는 배를 타고 먼 바다로 항해를 나가고, 엄마는 정원의 등나무 덩굴 아래서 낙담에 잠겨 있는 사이 도깨비들은 Ida(아이다)의 동생인 어린 여자아기를 신부로 삼기 위해 납치해 갑니다. 용감한 Ida, 엄마의 망토를 몸에 두르고 호른을 손에 쥔 채 동생을 구하러 도깨비들의 소글로 처들어 갑니다. 그 곳에서는 도깨비와 Ida의 동생간에 결혼식이 막 열리려던 참이었죠. Ida가 호른을 불기 시작하자 아기로 변신해 있던 도깨비들은 음악에 맞춰 춤을 추기 시작하고... 계속되는 호른 소리를 따라 춤을 추던 도깨비들은 결국 덩실대는 물결로 변하고 맙니다. 무사히 아기를 구출해서 집으로 데려온 Ida에게는 반가운 아빠의 편지가 기다리고 있습니다. "용감하고 영리한 Ida, 아빠를 대신해서 엄마와 아가를 잘 지켜주기 바란다."
어린이뿐만 아니라 어른 독자의 눈도 즐겁게 해주는, Maurice Sendak의 그림책중 아마도 가장 정교하고 화려한 아름다움을 지니고 있는 책.
