베스트셀러 그림책인 Mercer Mayer의 There's a... 시리즈입니다.
소녀는 도시에서 살 때는 무서운 것이 없었는데 시골로 이사온 후로는 밤에 다락에서 들리는 소리가 무섭습니다. 오늘 밤에도 불을 끄고 침대에 누었을 때, 머리맡 위의 천장에서 달그락달그락 소리가 들립니다. 잠을 자는 엄마와 아빠를 깨워서 다락에서 이상한 소리가 들린다고 얘기했지만, 엄마와 아빠는 쥐들이 달그락거리는 소리라고 하고는 그냥 잠을 자네요. 소녀는 직접 다락에 사는 괴물을 잡아서 엄마와 아빠에게 보여주기로 결심하고, 한 손에는 올가미, 다른 손에는 손전등을 들고서 다락방으로 올라갔습니다. 다락방에는 괴물은 봉지 않고, 박스 뒤에 잃어 버렸던 장난감들이 놓여 있었습니다. 그 때 다락방의 계단에서 무엇인가 올라오는 소리가 들렸습니다. 마침내 모습을 드러낸 것은... 커다란 괴물이 소녀의 새로 산 곰돌이 인형을 꼭 껴안고 있었지요. 소녀는 괴물에게 "그것은 내 곰돌이 인형이야. 당장 돌려줘!"라고 소리쳤지만, 괴물은 계단 아래로 도망을 쳤습니다. 소녀는 뒤쫓아 가서 올가미를 씌운 후 곰돌이 인형을 빼았으려고 했지만, 괴물은 인형을 빼았기지 않으려고 가슴에 꼭 쥐고 놓지를 않습니다. 소녀는 괴물을 엄마와 아빠에게 보여주기 위해 올가미를 씌운 괴물을 끌고 갔습니다. 그리고 엄마와 아빠를 깨워서 자랑스럽게 괴물을 잡았다고 얘기합니다. 엄마와 아빠가 방문 밖으로 나와서 올가미를 봤을 때...

Mayer's third book about nightmares features a feisty girl in blonde pigtails, nightgown, cowboy hat, and boots. When Mom and Dad don't believe that there's a nightmare in the attic, she decides to lasso it and bring it downstairs to show them. The fat friendly dragon-like monster appears with the girl's teddy bear and won't give it back. She pulls it down with the lasso to her parent's room, but it slips away, and she vows to retrieve her bear tomorrow. The predominately blue watercolors with black pen are not as refined as those in Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Dial, 1968). The outline and cross-hatching are thicker and resemble the illustrations in Mayer's There's an Alligator Under My Bed (Dial, 1987). The format remains large with creative use of white space and frames. The nightmare is a cream puff of a creature with child-like facial expressions. The story is satisfying, humorous, possibly bibliotherapeutic, and significantly different from previous titles to justify making room on the shelf for this nightmare as well.
