이 책은 우체국에서 어떤 과정을 거쳐서 편지나 소포를 배달하는지를 쉽고 재미있게 보여줍니다. 옛날에는 서신을 전하기 위해서는 인편으로 보내거나 말을 타고 달려 갔지요. 요즘에는 최신 우편시설과 교통수단의 도움을 받아 신속하고 정확하게 전달하고 있습니다.
우선 우편물을 보내기 위해서는 우표를 구입해서 붙여야 하며, 무게가 많이 나가는 우편물은 별도의 요금을 지불해야 합니다. 우편물의 겉봉에는 배달지역을 숫자로 표시한 우편번호를 기재해야 하지요. 수거된 우편물은 우체국에서 분류작업을 하며, 다른 지역으로 배달되는 우편물은 집중국이라고 불리우는 큰 우체국으로 보내집니다. 집중국에서는 여러 우체국에서 모아진 우편물들을 크기별로 분류하고 우표에 소인을 찍은 다음, 우편번호에 따라 배달 지역별로 자동으로 분류작업을 하고 묶음을 만든 후, 차량, 비행기, 배 등을 이용해서 해당 지역의 우체국으로 싣고 갑니다...
