In this beloved story, Timothy goes blissfully off to school wearing a new sunsuit lovingly made by his mother. Timothy is happy until his teacher seats him next to Claude. Claude, clad in a jacket and tie, informs Timothy that he has made a serious blunder. Nobody wears a sunsuit on the first day of school. Timothy's days continue in much the same way, as Claude makes fun of each new outfit. Timothy waits in vain for Claude to make a mistake but Mr. Perfect never does. As Claude flawlessly plays the saxophone in a school assembly, Timothy hears classmate Violet complaining about seatmate Grace. Grace, like Claude, seems to be perfect. Timothy and Violet form an instant bond and have fun playing together. In this funny story that smacks of realism, children will be reassured to see that perfection isn't all it's cracked up to be.

In Timothy, Wells has created a protagonist who echoes the child's fears about fitting into the new, strange school environment. Timothy's first excitement over going to school is dimmed as he discovers that he has worn the wrong clothes and the situation only worsens as "perfect" Claude draws all the positive attention from the teacher and classmates. Parent Council Reviews
Trying to please others via little superfluous things is the way to make friends. Timothy is only happy and comfortable at his new school when he expresses himself and finds a friend with whom he shares things in common. Rosemary Wells does it again, a nice gift choice.
