The exuberant Pinkerton defeats all the family's attempts to teach him to behave. He misinterprets every simple command from "come" to "fetch" and considers a burglar his best friend. After his fellow students at obedience school begin to follow Pinkerton instead of the teacher, he is summarily dismissed from school. In a series of wonderful illustrations, however, Pinkerton saves the day as his family issues mixed-up commands. He successfully chases a burglar out the window as his young owner shouts "Come!" The first book in a series begun in 1979, this book and other Pinkerton books are nursery school and family favorites. Preschoolers delight in the verbal and visual confusion and jokes.
