산들바람이 불어 오자, 개미들은 어디선가 풍기는 맛있는 음식 냄새를 맡았습니다. 누군가 음식을 싸들고 소풍을 나왔나봅니다. 배고픈 100마리의 개미들은 소풍 음식을 먹기 위해 1열 종대로 행진을 시작했습니다. 하지만 가는 도중에 다른 동물들이 음식을 한가지씩 챙겨가는 것을 본 개미들은 행진 속도가 느리다고 생각하고는 50마리씩 2열종대로 바꿔서 행진합니다. 그러나 가는 도중 계속 다른 동물들이 음식들을 들고 오는 것을 보고는 마음이 조급해진 개미들은 25마리씩 4열 종대, 20마리씩 5열 종대, 그리고 마지막에는 10마리씩 10열 종대로 음식을 향해 발걸음을 재촉했습니다. 하지만 소풍 장소에 가보니 이미 음식은 다 사라지고 없었습니다. 계속 열을 바꾸느라 시간을 너무 낭비했었나 봅니다...
마지막에는 느림보 거북이와 달팽이까지도 10열로 행진하는 개미 옆을 지나 음식을 챙겨가는 모습이 매우 재미있습니다.
곱셈과 나눗셈의 기본개념을 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 도와주는 책입니다.

A first-time author and illustrator are off to an impressive start in this spirited story, whose message might well be ``divide and conquer.'' Pinczes's bouncy rhymed verse introduces 100 ants marching in single file en route to a picnic, where ``There'll be lots of yummies / for our hungry tummies, / A hey and a hi dee ho!'' But the littlest ant decides they're moving too slowly, and suggests a new formation--``with 2 lines of 50 / we'd get there soon, I know.'' But not, however, soon enough: as he spies other animals scurrying by with food, he fears there will be nothing left to eat. Hoping to speed the pace, he directs his fellow marchers to break into four columns of 25; then five rows of 20; and finally 10 lines of 10. The subliminal math lesson is a bonus for youngsters at the older edge of the intended audience, while readers of any age will relish the unexpected ending. Reminiscent of woodblocks, MacKain's illustrations work superbly on a child's level--the unexpected pairing of sophisticated art and lighthearted text lends this book particular distinction. The comical facial expressions of these ravenous creatures, rendered in unusual and subtle hues, reinforce the tale's winning drollery.

En route, the littlest one suggests that they divide into two lines of fifty to save time. When that doesn't seem to speed up their progress, he suggests they rearrange themselves again into four, then five, and finally 10 lines. Will they arrive at the picnic before the food is gone? I'll just say "A hey and a hi dee ho!" this is a book you will want to know, for the pure pleasure it gives as well as its humorous introduction to division.
