Plants seem to be everywhere and they come in numerous sizes, shapes, and colors. How do they appear almost everywhere? Flowers usually have pollen, and the pollen helps the plant make seeds—birds, insects, and the wind help in dispersing pollen. The process of germination is illustrated with the planting and sprouting of a bean seed. As the bean develops, roots and leaves become part of the plant food factory. Some plants make their own food using water, air, and sunlight. A few plants eat insects while others have a symbiotic relationship with other plants. Currently, there are more than 300,000 types of plants and only a very small percentage of these provide the main foods that we eat. Plants also clean the air so we do need to take care of them. The text is interesting and informative and the pictures are excellent. A "Time for Kids" Level 1 book in the "Science Scoops" series which should be on every school library shelf. Books at this level use short simple sentences, large type, and a single photograph on a page. They also contain a picture dictionary.
