Book Description
Pet wanted. Max wants a furry pet. Emma wants a pet too, but she's allergic to animals with fur. When Emma finds the perfect animal, will Max like his sister's strange pet?
Marilyn Courtot
Max really wants a pet and he particularly wants a dog. Unfortunately Max's sister Emma is allergic to long haired animals so dogs, cats, rabbits and the like are not possible pets. Max is really disappointed, but his sister Emma surprises him when she says that she would like a pet for her birthday, pet that will not trigger her allergies. Off the family goes to the pet store where Emma falls for an anole, bright green lizard with a slender body and a fat tail. They eat live insect which the kids need to feed him, that part might gross out a few parents. Max finally is charmed by the pet they have named Stranger and gives up his quest for a furry one, but he goes a bit too far when he takes Stranger into his room. Peace is finally made between brother and sister and she even urges their Dad to buy another anole for Max and to provide company for Stranger. It is toward the end of the story that we learn that Max was himself once a stranger, but now is happily ensconced with his adoptive family. Part of the "An I Can Read Book" series.
School Library Journal
Despite her allergies, Emma wants a pet as a birthday gift. Her parents agree to her request-as long as she selects an animal without fur. Emma chooses a lizard, and she and her brother Max delight in its eating habits and changing color. When Emma realizes that Max is unhappy because he doesn't have his own pet, she convinces her father to get him a lizard. Little portrays real characters who bring everyday problems to satisfying conclusions. Simple, full-color line-and-watercolor illustrations do a great job of capturing expressions of confusion, worry, anger, and joy. An exceptional beginning reader.
