그리고 어느날 밀드레와 샘이 함께 점심을 먹을 때, 샘은 아기 생쥐들이 이제는 새로운 무엇인가가 필요하다고 말합니다. 그리고 이제는 아기 생쥐들이 밖에서 자기들끼리 놀게도 해주고, 발로 밀면서 타고 노는 스쿠터와 예쁜 가방들도 만들어 줍니다. 아빠 샘이 아이들에게 신발 끈을 매는 법을 가르쳐주면, 아니들은 엄마 밀드레드의 털 위에다 리본을 묶는 연습을 합니다. 엄마 밀드레드는 아기 생쥐들에게 모자와 스웨터를 만들어주고 스스로 옷을 입는 법을 가르쳐 줍니다. 아빠 샘은 아기들에게 연필을 깎아 주고, 예쁜 도시락 가방을 만들어 줍니다. 그리고 마침내 8마리 아기 생쥐들이 학교에 등교하는 날이 오고, 샘은 아이들을 학교로 보낸 후 과연 그들이 학교 생활을 잘 하고 있을지 걱정을 합니다. 아빠 밀드레드는 걱정하지 말라고 하고, 아이들은 엄마의 걱정과는 달리 학교생활을 잘 해냅니다...
