From the Publisher
While on a sleepover, Joe and Sam learn the meaning of a horror story as they get caught up in a real, live nightmare of their own! Join Joe and Sam as they come face-to-face with Frankenstein's monster, and take him back to the nineteenth century to drop him off with his creator, Mary Shelley. Will Joe and Sam fix everything with their time-warping power, or will Mary Shelley's famous monster be erased from history forever?
Children's Literature
This book serves as an excellent transition from graphic novels to juvenile fiction, enticing readers to try other works by the author. Children raised on books by Scieszka, starting with The Stinky Cheese Man and continuing through Knights of the Kitchen Table, would be very happy and well read children. Scieszka writes for kids, with the requisite jokes and random silliness, but also with the expectation that the readers will have a sufficient literary and scholastic background to understand humor. For reader's less familiar with the background of the story, Scieszka provides fun facts interspersed throughout the graphic novel. The best part of any of his books may be their ability to spark the reader's curiosity about the people and places the characters visit via time-warp. These books would be appropriate in the classroom (generating discussion about the time periods visited) and the library (Nightmare on Joe's Street would lend itself well to books by and about Mary Shelly and the other literary characters mentioned in the text). Scieszka's words are wonderful, but the illustrations in this book, while clear, lack movement and vivid color. That small flaw, however, does not detract much from enjoyment of the book; fans, new and old, will be thrilled to see the Time Warp Trio traversing the space-time continuum again.
School Library Journal
First there were books, then there was a television show, now there are books adapted from the television show. The Time Warp Trio is fast becoming its own brand! In the first graphic novel, adapted from an episode's teleplay, the boys go back to 1816. Frankenstein's monster has come to life and is out for revenge. He's after Mary Shelley, the woman who created him and made him so ugly. The boys (Joe and Sam minus Fred) must again use the time-traveling book to set things right. While there's nothing new in this novel, the dialogue and characters are still funny, and the full-color pictures are almost snapshots of the episode. Fans of the series and the show will enjoy the format. Libraries with lots of "Trio" requests will want to make room for this one.
