작가의 아이디어에 감탄하지 않을 수 없는 책입니다.
첫 페이지를 넘기면... 아름다운 그림 대신, 까만 종이 위에 뻥 뚫린 구멍 두개, 구멍 뒤의 노란 눈이 나옵니다.
다음 페이지를 넘기면... 역시 까만 종이 위에 노란 눈, 그리고 이번엔 아래 위로 길게 뚫린 구멍, 바로 초록색 코가 더해 집니다.
이런 식으로 각 페이지 마다 구멍이 하나씩 늘어나고 그에 따라 귀여운 초록 괴물이 점차 모습을 드러냅니다.
이번엔 괴물을 사라지게 할 차례입니다. "Go away!"를 외치면서 페이지를 한 장씩 넘겨보세요. 귀, 코, 얼굴, 입, 눈이 차례로 사라집니다.
어린 독자들이 책의 재미에 푹 빠지면서 책 밑에 있는 간단한 영어문장을 외치다 보면 자신도 모르게 영어가 자연스러운 의사표현의 수단이 되지요.

Emberley, a Caldecott medalist whose delightful drawing books demonstrate a combination of rudimentary forms to create a world of images, uses simple shapes in bright colors to build a scowling, cartoonish face that seems to float against the solid black field- -scary, but deliciously so.
