널리 알려진 동요 'Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush' 노래와 그 내용에 맞춘 책입니다.
이 책에는 이 책을 읽는 아이들 또래의 하루 일과와 생활 습관이 담겨져 있습니다.
첫 장에는 침대에서 일어나는 것부터 나와 있습니다. “서늘한 아침에 우리는 침대에서 이렇게 일어나지요.(get out of bed)” 아이들이 이렇게 노래를 부르며 따뜻한 이불을 박차고 일어납니다. 하품을 하는 아이, 침대에서 나와서도 눈을 감고 있는 아이, 기지개를 펴고 활기차게 아침을 시작하는 아이 등 여러 그림이 그려져 있어 이해하기 쉽습니다.
다음은 아침 식사입니다. 아이들이 식탁에 둘러앉아 ‘munch and crunch’(아삭거리며) 하며 빵과 우유를 먹습니다. 피부가 하얀 아이, 까만 아이, 어린 아기와 곰돌이 인형까지도 아침을 먹는 시간이지요. 아침을 먹고나면 양치질(bruch our teeth)을 하고 세수하고 몸을 닦지요(wash and scrub). 그리고는 스스로 옷을 입고(dress ourselves), 머리를 빗고(brush and comb), 학교에 갑니다(get go school). 학교에선 하루종일 열심히 공부하고, 뛰기도 하며, 놀기도 하지요. 점심을 먹고(eat our lunch) 집으로 돌아온(go home) 아이들은 TV를 보고, 음악을 듣고, 책을 읽으면서 휴식을 취하고 밤이 되면 “Good night”하고는 잠자리에 듭니다.
마치 우리나라 동요 '둥근 해가 떴습니다'와도 비슷한 줄거리를 가지고 있지요. 율동을 하며 노래를 부르다 보면 생활습관에 관한 영어 또한 쉽게 익힐 수 있는 유익한 책입니다. 각 페이지마다 다양한 물품을 나타내는 구멍이 뚫려 있어 아이들의 흥미를 끄는 책입니다.

``Dear Friend,'' entreats this book's cover, ``I am in urgent need of your help. Travel to Puzzle Island . . . and help me to save the rarest creature in the world from extinction.'' Thus begins an intricate, engrossing puzzle certain to happily bedevil reader-detectives. Each of 11 elaborately detailed illustrations depicts a different part of the island, and squirreled away in each are the figures of four different creatures (space between certain branches of one tree, for example, is shaped like an upside-down cow). Adshead frames each picture with four alphabets; letters from each are missing, and these can be unscrambled to disclose the names of the hidden animals. Once these amiable tasks have been accomplished, however, the hunt for the ``rare creature'' is far from over. There are more messages to be assembled, concealed words, secret codes, rhyming clues. The text is wordy, the age range here misleading--could a five-year-old rearrange ``abdhimnry'' to spell ``mynah bird''?--but would-be Sherlocks and amateur cryptanalysts with good verbal skills could not wish for anything more.
Children's Literature
For individuals or group detective work, this creative puzzle/book challenges youngsters to read a diary, decipher the clues, make inferences, identify and help rescue an endangered species. Lush tropical paintings give this paperback the tone of a picture book. But don't be too quick to jump to conclusions: traces of evidence are hidden with great skill in the detailed jungle scenes.
