Bobton-Trent 부부는 엄청난 부자입니다. 런던, 뉴욕, 밀라노에 대저택이 있으며, 해외 여행, 쇼핑, 외식, 유명인과의 파티 등을 즐기면서 하루하루를 보냈습니다. 하지만 이런 호사스러운 생활에 싫증을 느끼게 되자 부부가 선택한 방법은 애를 갖는 것이었으며, 그 결과물로 Hubert Horatio Bartle Bobton-Trent라는 긴 이름을 지닌 아이가 태어났습니다. Hubert는 태어나자마자 비범한 능력을 보여주기 시작했습니다. 한 살 때는 전화를 할 수 있었고, 두 살 때는 신문을 읽을 수 있었고, 세 살 때는 수영을 할 수 있었으며, 특히 케이크 만들기와 꽃 장식에는 천부적인 재능을 보여줬습니다. 그리고 허버트와 부모는 밤마다 보드게임을 즐겼습니다.
하지만 허버트가 학교에 다니던 때, 부모가 파산하게 되고... 무능한 부모를 대신해서 허버트는 집안의 재정 관리를 도맡게 됩니다. 처음에는 집안의 잡동사니들을 팔아서 샐활을 유지했지만, 결국 집을 팔아야 할 상황이 되자 허버트는 친구인 스텐튼의 도움을 받아서 좋은 방법을 생각해 냅니다.
첫번째 방법은 각종 보드게임 대회에 나가서 상금을 타는 것이었습니다. 하지만 대회에서 우승할 때마다 철없는 부모는 모든 참가자들을 초청해서 파티를 하는 바람에 남는 것이 없었습니다.
두번째 방법은 대저택을 일반인에게 공개해서 입장료를 받는 것이었습니다. 하지만 많은 사람들이 방문할 수록 철없는 부모는 그들에게 입장료보다 더 많은 경비를 들여 대접하는 바람에 결국 아무런 이익도 남길 수 없었습니다.
