This novelty book presents questions and answers, uniquely devised, on a series of white and colored pages. It begins on the back of the title page with the simple image of a large black question mark on a white sheet. The opposite page, also white, shows nine small cut-outs of different shapes and sizes. Through the holes, a page of mottled blue and brown can be seen underneath. When the page is turned, the word lamb! appears on the back of the page with the cut-outs, while the opposite page shows the blue and brown of an evening hillside with a lamb that has been assembled from the pasted-on cutout pieces removed from the preceding page. This same format follows for a frog, a goose, three mice, a cat and, finally, an owl. In each new puzzle, it is difficult to guess what animal will be constructed from the cut-out pieces. (The sole exception is the owl, which has been expected since the beginning, thanks to the book s title.) The cut-outs are cunningly arranged so that none of the creatures that will be constructed can be seen through the holes before the page is turned. In spite of its value as a curiosity piece, this story-less book will give child readers little reason to visit it over and over again.
