무민(Moomin, Muumi)은 핀란드의 오래된 동화에 나오는 귀여운 모양을 한 괴물이며, 핀란드의 작가 토베 얀손에 의해 다양한 책과 만화의 캐릭터로 널리 알려지게 되었습니다. 그리고 일본에서 무민이 애니메이션으로 제작되면서 전 세계적으로 큰 인기를 얻었습니다. 국제 안데르센상을 비롯해 수많은 상을 받은 무민동화는 31개 나라에서 번역되어 전 세계 어린이들로부터 사랑받는 현대의 고전이며, 이미 수차례 만화영화와 텔레비전 드라마로, 또 연극으로도 소개된바 있습니다.

무민은 색깔은 희고 포동포동하며 주둥이가 커서 전반적으로 하마를 닮은 트롤(괴물)입니다. 이들은 핀란드의 숲 속에 있다는 무민의 골짜기에서 사는데, 동화 속에서 친구들과 함께 많은 모험을 합니다.
이 책에서는 어느 여름날 무민 골짜기에 들이닥친 홍수로 인해 벌어지는 이야기가 펼쳐집니다.
6월 어느 무더운 날, 무민 가족들은 너무 더워서 정원에 나가 잠을 잡니다. 그런데 갑자기 발밑 아득한 곳에서 우르릉 거리는 소리와 함께 거대한 파도가 밀려와 무민 골짜기를 삽시간에 집어삼킵니다. 물난리를 피해 지붕 위로 올라간 무민 가족들은 새 집을 발견하고는 모두 그리로 옮겨갑니다. 그런데 그 집에서는 이상한 사건들이 꼬리를 물고 벌어지기 시작하고, 나무 위에서 잠을 자던 무민트롤과 스노크 아가씨는 가족들과 헤어져 헤물렌의 감옥에 갇히게 됩니다. 무민 가족들은 무사히 다시 만날 수 있을까요...
