아기쥐가 잠자리에 들기 전에 엄마쥐는 굿나잇 뽀뽀를 해줬습니다. 그리고 방을 나가려는데 갑자기 아기쥐가 울음을 터트리네요.
엄마쥐가 묻습니다. "Why are you crying?" (아가야. 왜 우니?)
아기쥐가 대답합니다. "I want another, Mother." (엄마, 굿나잇 뽀뽀 한번 더해주세요.)
그런데 엄마쥐는 이 문장을 "I want another mother." (다른 엄마를 원해요)로 들었습니다. 쉼표 하나 있고 없고가 이런 커다란 차이를 만드는군요.
엄마쥐는 아기쥐를 달래기 위해 다른 엄마들을 데려옵니다. 오리엄마, 개구리엄마, 돼지엄마, 당나귀엄마...
하지만 다른 엄마들을 볼 때마다 아기쥐가 하는 말은 "Mother, Mother, I Want Another."
그리고 마지막에는 참다못해서 외치는 말은
"No more mothers!"
"I want another kiss!"

A newly illustrated edition of a charming bedtime story first published in 1976, with equally charming pictures that emphasize the silliness and coziness of the text. When Mother Mouse puts her child to bed, she kisses him good night. But he starts to cry, declaring, "I want another, Mother." She assumes he wants another mother, and the story continues from there as she enlists various animals to be his other mother (even as she looks rather stricken at the prospect). A cumulative, satisfyingly repetitive story, this also offers young children a chance to get the joke well before the adult does. Goodell's colorful paintings are a delight, adding humor, emotion, and liveliness. Since this was first published, there has been an overabundance of sweet bedtime stories. This one is not especially distinctive, but is certainly good fun. All but the smallest collections will want to consider adding it to their supply of books designed to end the day with a smile (and a kiss, of course).
