From "one `I'm so glad you're my baby!' hug" to 10 " `I love you!' good-night hugs," Daddy covers all the bases. Katz's signature patterns in polka-dots and plaids, and Crayola-bright colors will reassure little ones that they can count on Dad's affection.

It is gratifying to see a Dad spending time with a little one. Here Daddy is reenacting typical events during a day and as he does so, baby gets a hug. There is one when it is wake up time to show how happy he is to be with his little baby. Then on to three hugs to help with the burping after a presumed feeding, five to kiss a boo-boo and make it all better, seven for pajama time, nine for don't be afraid of the dark, and then 10 big hugs to say goodnight "I love you!" While the text may not scan really well for a read aloud, the sentiment is nice and the pictures are engaging for a one-on-one with a child on your lap. 2005, McElderry Books/Simon & Schuster, Ages 1 to 5.

A father counts his way through a typical day with his baby, from "one `I'm so glad you're my baby!' hug" in the morning to 10 affectionate hugs before bed. Along the way there are boo-boos to be kissed, first steps, and games of peek-a-boo. Throughout the day, a brown cat in the background mirrors the actions and expressions of the child. Though Daddy Hugs is presented as a counting book, it doesn't really work in that role. Numerals appear at the top of each spread, but there are no countable objects to reinforce the concept (aside from the small, extraneous purple asterisks that appear near each number). Done in gouache, colored pencil, and collage, the illustrations are made up of Katz's signature patterned objects and cutesy round-headed figures. There is nothing that stands out about this title; consider purchasing it only if you need more stories about a father-child bond.

Hugs-and dads-get their due in this jubilant counting book. In scenes bursting with the high-energy colors and patterns of a crazy quilt, a father lists and demonstrates with his toddler the 10 categories of daddy hugs: "Eight dancing on Daddy's feet cha-cha hugs," "Nine 'Don't be afraid of the dark' hugs." Like a hidden camera, Katz's collages capture those private, priceless moments of one-on-one time between a parent and child. Ending with a "good night hug," this is an ideal bedtime book for dads to read aloud. (ages Birth to 2)
