펭귄을 애완동물로 키운다면 어떤 일이 벌어질까?
깔끔한 정장차림에 나비넥타이를 한 엘리엇은 한 눈에 봐도 반듯하고 예의바른 어린이입니다. 반대로 아빠는 약간 낡은 스타일의 체크무늬 옷을 입었고 싱글벙글 웃으며 늘 편하게 앉아있습니다. 어느 날 아빠와 엘리엇이 수족관에 놀러가며 사건이 시작됩니다.
아빠가 잡지를 읽는 동안 엘리엇은 혼자 구경을 하다 마음에 꼭 드는 펭귄을 발견한 것. 엘리엇은 마치 연미복을 입은 듯 날렵한 펭귄을 기르고 싶어 아빠에게 허락을 구하는데 정작 아빠는 펭귄 인형을 갖고 싶어 하는 줄 알고 승낙합니다. 아빠 몰래 ‘마젤란’ 펭귄을 집으로 데려온 엘리엇은 비닐 풀장에 아이스 링크를 만들고 펭귄과 스케이트를 타고, 함께 도서관에 가고, 멸치 피자(엔초비 피자)를 나눠먹고, 펭귄이 욕조 물에 잠수하도록 도우며 신나게 놀았습니다.
대체 엘리엇이 언제까지 아빠 몰래 펭귄을 돌볼 수 있을지 궁금할 즈음 깜짝 놀랄 반전이 독자를 기다립니다. 실은 엘리엇뿐 아니라 아빠도 진짜 거북이 ‘쿡 선장’을 기르고 있었던 것. 표정과 자세와 옷차림에서 전혀 달라보였던 아빠와 아들은 애완동물에 대한 사랑만큼은 닮은꼴이었던 것이죠. 마지막 페이지를 넘긴 순간 처음부터 꼼꼼히 책을 보지 않을 수 없는 유쾌한 반전이 독자를 기다리고 있습니다.

When well-mannered Elliot reluctantly visits the aquarium with his distractible father, he politely asks whether he can have a penguin--and then removes one from the penguin pool to his backpack. The fun of caring for a penguin in a New England Victorian house is followed by a surprise revelation by Elliot's father.

Polite, bow-tie-and-suit-wearing Elliot is none too excited when his father suggests attending Family Fun Day at the aquarium. But once he is there, he is drawn to the Magellanic penguins, whose tidy black feather tuxedos with their proper posture remind Elliot of himself. So he decides to sneak one home in his backpack, under his father’s seemingly oblivious eye. Once home, Elliot and his new penguin pal dine on frozen anchovy pizzas, share Goldfish crackers, and skate on a mini ice rink in his room (created with a wading pool and hose) - all the while his father is blithely engaged with his atlas, maps, and charts and appears not to notice the goings-on. Small’s black-and-white line illustrations with pops of soft color are an artful blend of elegance, wit, and whimsy. They echo and complement the text and depict expressive characters, including the playful penguin. This charming picture book has many humorous details throughout, and kids will likely laugh out loud at the surprise ending - particularly for the father!
