이 책의 주인공 ‘몰리’는 강아지만 한 키에 실수투성이고, 뻐드렁니에 보아뱀에게 잡힌 황소개구리처럼 괴상한 목소리를 가진 아이랍니다. 그래서 땅꼬마, 뻐드렁니, 실수투성이…… 몰리를 표현하는 말은 참 많지요. 하지만 몰리는 이러한 자신의 모습을 부끄러워하거나 애써 감추려 하지 않습니다. 오히려 씩씩하게 드러내어 친구들에게 큰 기쁨과 즐거움을 선사하지요. 그렇다고 몰리만의 특별한 비법이 있는 건 아닙니다. 다만 할머니가 씩씩하게 걷고, 환하게 웃고, 목청껏 노래하라고 늘 말씀하셨고 몰리는 그런 할머니의 말씀을 마음속에 꼭꼭 새겨두었을 뿐이지요.
그러던 어느 날, 몰리네는 다른 마을로 이사를 갑니다. 전학 첫날부터 반의 말썽쟁이가 몰리를 놀리며 괴롭힙니다. 하지만 몰리는 눈물을 보이거나 화를 내지 않습니다. 그런 친구를 만나면 어떻게 해야 하는지 아주 잘 알고 있기 때문이지요.

Although first-grader Molly Lou Melon is extremely short, has buck teeth you can stack pennies on and a bull-frog voice, and is clumsy, her grandmother keeps reminding her that if she believes in herself, the world will believe in her, too. When Molly Lou's family moves, and she encounters the school bully, Ronald Durkin, she remembers her grandmother's advice. When he calls her "SHRIMPO!" she beats him at football and, full of self-confidence, meets his other taunts with an astounding array of talents. The intricate snowflake she cuts wins Ronald's admiration and his gift of a stacking penny for her teeth. Catrow's pencil and neon-green-tinged watercolor illustrations suit the exuberant, over-the-top quality of the protagonist and text. The book's message, however, may leave readers wondering if the way to deal with a bully is just to be better at everything, which might not be feasible for many children. Judith Caseley's Bully (Greenwillow, 2001) is more realistic. Still, Lovell's story is good fun, and to believe in oneself, in all one's variability, is a laudable theme.
