Book Description
Because the moon revolves around Earth, it seems to grow and shrink.Children can read about the phenomena of the moons phases and with an experiment using an orange, a pencil, and a flashlight, they can see why the moon looks different at different times of the month. A welcome addition to science collections for young children.

Annotation
Explains the phases of the moon--the changes that seem to happen to it as it goes around Earth.

Children's Literature
A pragmatic child may be interested in a book that takes a realistic look at the moon. Branley provides easy-to-grasp explanations of such phenomenon as waxing and waning, and the pictures by husband-and-wife team Ed and Barbara Emberley reinforce the concepts in a whimsical fashion that in no way detracts from the scientific nature of the book. Part of the "Let's-Read-and-Find-Out" series. - Mary Quattlebaum

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2 This revision of the 1960 edition more fully explains the phases of the moonor the changes that seem to happen as it goes around the earththan the earlier version. Branley explains the waxing and waning of the moon and compares the length of a day on earth and on the moon. Each page has colorful explanatory illustrations. Simon's The Moon (Four Winds, 1984) is more detailed and has exceptional photographs, but Branley's brief-easy-to-read text and the Emberleys' diagrams make this book a welcome addition to science collections for young children or the picture book section.
