메이플이 아직 엄마 뱃속에 있을 때, 엄마와 아빠는 메이플의 탄생을 기념해서 마당에 단풍나무(Maple) 한 그루를 심었습니다. 그리고 메이플이 태어났을 때 자연스럽게 엄마와 아빠는 아기 이름을 메이플(Maple)이라고 지어줬지요. 그리고 마찬가지로 메이플의 동생은 버드나무(Willow), 즉 윌로우라고 지었습니다.
갓난 아기였던 윌로우도 무럭무럭 자라서, 이제 메이플과 윌로우는 하루종일 함께 놀고, 일년 내내 햇볕과 빗소리와 낙엽과 눈을 함께 즐기며 보냅니다. 아침에 눈을 떠서 저녁에 한 침대에 누워 잘 때까지 메이플과 윌로우는 단짝이 되어 꼭 붙어 지냅니다. 하지만 자매 사이에 언제나 따사로운 햇볕과 예쁜 무지개만 함께 할 수는 없는 법이죠.
메이플은 숨박꼭질을 할 때, 술레가 된 윌로우가 숫자를 빼먹고 10까지 세는 것이 못마땅합니다.
비가 오는 날에는 메이플은 우산을 쓰고 싶어하고, 윌로우는 비를 맞으며 웅덩이에서 첨벙거리는 것을 좋아하고,
비가 갠 후에는 메이플은 지렁이를 잡아서 상자에 넣는 것을 좋아하는 반면에, 윌로우는 손으로 만지는 것을 좋아하고,
메이플은 민들레 꽃을 수집하는 것을 좋아하는 반면에, 윌로우는 민들레꽃을 입으로 불어서 홀씨들을 바람에 날리는 것을 좋아합니다.
참다못한 메이플이 윌로우에게 잔소리를 퍼붓자, 화가 난 윌로우는 언니의 장난감을 발로 밟아 버리고, 이 모습을 본 메이플은 윌로우를 밀어버립니다. 그리고는 둘이는 다시는 서로 보지 않겠다며 각자의 방으로 들어가 버립니다.
하지만 혼자 있는 것은 너무나도 지루하고 심심하지요. 결국 자매간의 다툼은 칼로 물베기... 둘은 언제 그랬냐는 듯이 방에서 나와 자신이 좋아하는 구슬과 나뭇잎을 상대방에게 주고, 같이 밖에 나가서 뛰어 놀고, 같이 목욕하고, 같이 책을 읽고, 꼭 껴안고 잠이 듭니다...

Digitally colored pencil on Mylar drawings balance dainty lines in spare scenes of varying perspective and palette. Nichols keeps her tale blissfully simple to complement the youngsters' antics.
