[ 책 소개 ]
* 2017 Star of the North Picture Book (First Place) 수상도서
국내에서도 번역서가 출간된 베스트셀러 그림책 "My Heart Is Like a Zoo (내 마음은 사랑의 동물원)"과 "Perfect Square (행복한 네모 이야기)"의 저자인 마이클 홀의 또 하나의 대표작입니다. 이 책 역시 국내에서 "빨강: 크레용의 이야기"이라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 명작그림책입니다.
그 애의 이름은 "빨간색"이었어요. 공장에서 나올 때부터 옷에 "빨간색"이라는 이름이 인쇄되어 있었던 크레용이었지요. 하지만 "빨간색" 크레용은 사실은 파란색이었는데 공장에서 실수로 "빨간색"이라는 포장지를 잘못 입혀준 것이었어요. 그러다보니 당연히 "빨간색" 크레용은 빨간 그림을 잘 그리지 못했어요.
부모님과 선생님은 "빨간색"이 더 노력해야 한다고 생각했어요. 그래서 이렇게도 해 보고, 저렇게도 해 보았지요. 다른 사람들도 모두 "빨간색"이 아직 노력이 부족하다고 했어요. 시간이 지나면 더 나아질 거라고도 했습니다. 다른 학용품 친구들은 "빨간색"이 부러졌다거나 포장지가 너무 꼭 낀다거나 너무 뭉툭해서 그렇다고 생각했어요. 모두들 열심히 도와주었지만 "빨간색"은 계속 빨간색을 잘 그리지 못했어요.
그러던 어느 날 "빨간색"은 "자두색" 크레용을 만났어요. "자두색" 크레용은 자두색 배를 그린 후, "빨간색" 크레용에게 바다를 그려 달라고 했지요. "빨간색"은 색깔이 빨강이라서 할 수 없다고 했지만, 자두색 크레용은 그냥 한번 해 보라고 했고, "빨간색" 크레용은 그냥 한번 해 봤어요. 그랬더니 예쁜 푸른 바다가 그려졌어요!
그 애가 사실은 파란색인 줄 누가 알았겠어요?
그 애는 파랑이었어요! 그후로 이름이 "빨간색"인 파랑이는 계속 예쁜 파란색을 그렸어요. 청바지도 그리고, 파랑새도 그리고, 파란 고래도 예쁘게 그렸지요. 모두들 좋아했어요. 부모님은 기특하다고 했고, 친구들은 기분이 좋아진다고 했어요.
파랑이었던 "빨간색"은 공장에서 옷을 잘못 입고 세상에 나왔어요. 주변 사람들은 "빨간색"의 옷만 보고는 더 잘살려면 더 노력해서 빨간 옷에 맞는 역할을 해야 한다고 생각했어요. 하지만 "빨간색" 크레용은 파랑이었지요. 빨간 옷을 입고 있었지만 파랑이었어요. 빨간색을 잘 그리는 것은 못해도 파란색은 아주 예쁘게 잘 그릴 줄 아는 아이였지요.
실패한 것으로, 보이는 것으로만 평가하지 않고 아이 스스로 자신을 되돌아 볼 기회를 주었으면 합니다. 아이들은 모두 자신에게 꼭 맞는 능력을 발견할 수 있을 거예요.
