소년은 왜 고향을 떠나야 했던 걸까요? 우리가 소년에 대해 아는 것이라곤 ‘어쩔 수 없이’ 고향을 떠나게 되었다는 사실, 하나뿐입니다. 어쩔 수 없이 떠났기에 고향은 소년에게 늘 그리움의 대상입니다. 너른 바다 위에서 바닷바람의 소금기를 맛보고, 흘러가는 구름을 보고, 고래들이 서로 부르는 소리를 들으며 고향에서의 추억을 떠올릴 만큼요.
바다가 거친 날에도 찻잔을 꼬옥 쥐고 있었던 것은 그 속에 소중한 고향의 흙이 담겨 있기 때문이겠지요. 그런데 소년에게 펼쳐질 새로운 삶을 암시하듯 이 흙에서 새싹이 돋아납니다. 새싹은 사과나무로 자라나 소년의 안식처가 되어 주고 마침내 발견한 새 땅에서 사과나무는 새롭게 뿌리를 내립니다. 그리고 어느 날, 소년은 배에서 내리는 한 소녀를 만납니다. 소년이 찻잔을 간직했던 것처럼 깨진 달걀 컵을 간직한 소녀였지요.
이 책의 그림은 처음엔 몽환적이었다가 점차 강렬해지고 선명해지는 색을 따라가다 보면 마치 우리도 소년과 함께 바다로 향하는 듯한 느낌이 듭니다. 또한 물의 투명한 속성을 놓치지 않고, 물에 반사된 모습을 효과적으로 활용하여 하늘과 바다가 마치 하나인 듯 보입니다. 이 책의 일러스트레이터인 맷 오틀리는 오일 페인팅 기법으로 하늘과 바다뿐만 아니라, 이야기에도 색과 질감을 덧입혀 독자들에게 한 층 더 벅찬 감동을 선사합니다.
