[ 책 소개 ]
베티 버니는 정말 까다로운 아이예요. 고집 세고, 인내심 없고, 지멋대로 행동하곤 합니다. 어느날 저녁식사 후, 베티 버니는 태어나서 처음으로 초콜렛 케익을 먹어보고는 그 황홀한 맛에 푹 빠져버렸습니다. 급기야는 나중에 어른이 되면 초콜렛 케익과 결혼하겠다고 선언을 했습니다.
오로지 머리 속에는 초콜렛 케익 생각으로 가득한 베티 버니... 학교에 가서도 노는 시간에 흙과 물을 섞어서 초콜렛 케익 모양을 만든 후, 이것을 먹어보려고 까지 했습니다.
집에 돌아오는 시간에 베티 버니는 엄마에게 계속 초콜렛 케익을 먹고싶다고 조르자, 엄마는 "원하는 것을 모두 가질 수는 없단다. 기다릴 줄도 알아야 해. 이것이 바로 인내심이야"라고 말해줍니다.
저녁 식사 시간에 엄마는 식사를 모두 마치면 초콜렛 케익을 주겠다고 하지만, 베티 버니는 밥 먹는 것을 거부하고 계속 초콜렛 케익 타령을 합니다. 언니 오빠들이 나서서 초코렛 케익을 먹고 싶으면 먼저 밥을 먹으라고 충고하지만, 베티 버니는 언니 오빠에게 음식들을 집어던지는 만행을 저지르네요.
엄마에게 혼나고 침심로 쫓겨난 베티 버니에게 엄마가 찾아와서 다음날 저녁 식사를 잘 마치면 지금 냉장고 안에 잘 보관 중인 초콜렛 케익을 주겠다고 약속합니다. 다음날 아침, 학교에 가기 전에 냉장고 안에 초콜렛 케익이 잘 있는지 확인하던 베티 버니는 문득 초콜렛 케익이 하루 종일 외롭겠다는 생각을 합니다. 그리고는 초콜렛 케익을 자신의 주머니에 넣고 학교로 갔습니다.
그날 저녁 엄마와 약속대로 저녁을 모두 먹은 후, 초콜렛 케익을 먹으려고 주머니에 손을 넣은 베티 버니는 초콜렛 케익이 이미 주머니 속에서 뒤죽박죽이 되어서 운명을 달리했음을 알게 되고...
