국내에서는 "칼 세이건: 코스모스로 우주의 신비를 들려준 천문학자"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간된 베스트셀러 과학도서 "Star Stuff"의 저자 스테파니 로스 시슨의 또 하나의 대표작입니다. 이 책에서는 세계인들이 환경문제에 대해 무지했던 1950년대에 해양 환경문제와 살충제 오염 문제 등을 제기하여 커다란 반향을 일으켰던 선구적인 여성환경운동가이자 유명 작가인 레이철 카슨의 일대기를 쉽고 간결한 문장과 만화풍의 재미있는 그림으로 잘 보여줍니다.
어려서부터 대자연 속에서 새, 곤충, 다람쥐, 개구리 등 야생동물들과 교감하면서 자라온 레이첼은 계절의 변화에 다른 동물들의 활동들을 관찰하는 것이 커다란 즐거움이었습니다. 그리고 어려서부터 레이첼은 바다라는 미지의 환경 속에서 살아가는 해양생물들에 대해 큰 호기심이 있었습니다. 대학에 들어간 후, 레이첼은 본격적으로 해양생물들을 연구하기 시작했으며, 어류야생생물청에서 근무하면서 1941년 해양 자연사를 다룬 "해풍 아래 Under the Sea-Wind"라는 책을 출판하고, 1951년 해양 자연사에 관한 두 번째 책 "우리를 둘러싼 바다 The Sea Around Us"를 출판함으로써 유명한 베스트셀러 작가가 되었습니다.
그런데 레이첼의 눈에 이상한 일들이 보이기 시작했습니다. 동물들의 소리가 줄어들고, 호수의 물고기와 새들이 떼죽음 당하기 시작하는 등, 뭔가 좋지 않은 일들이 벌어지고 있는 것을 감지한 것입니다. 레이첼은 자연에서의 변화들을 자세히 관찰하고, 발견된 사실들을 모아서 결국 중요한 것을 알게 됩니다. 당시에는 모든 사람들이 그 위험성을 간과하고 무분별하게 사용했던 살충제가 원인이었던 것. 살충제의 독성이 곤충들과 미생물들을 오염시키고, 이들을 잡아먹은 물고기와 새들의 집단 폐사를 불러 일으켰으며, 새와 물고기를 잡아먹은 여우나 독수리같은 대형 포식자들까지도 죽음에 이르게 한 것입니다.
레이첼은 1962년에 살충제의 치명적인 위험성을 알리는 "침묵의 봄 (Silent Spring)"이라는 책을 출간하여 세계적인 반향을 불러 일으켰습니다. 그리고 케네디 대통령의 지시로 본격적인 조사가 시작되었으며, 마침내 유독성 살충제의 사용을 제한하는 법이 만들어졌습니다.
레이첼의 노력으로 망가졌던 자연은 점차 회복되기 시작했으며, 사람들이 환경 보호의 중요성을 깨닫게 되는 중요한 전환점이 되었습니다.
