누구나 골치아파하는 수학을 이 세상에서 가장 재미있고 떠들썩하게 배울 수 있는 책입니다. 국내에서는 "펭귄 365"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.
1월 1일, 새해 첫날 아침에 보낸 사람의 이름이나 주소도 없는 택배상자가 배달되었는데, 놀랍게도 상자 안에는 펭귄 1마리가 들어 있었어요. 그리고 다음날부터 매일마다 1마리씩 펭귄이 배달되었어요. 1월 31일이 되자 집 안에 펭귄은 31마리로 불어나고, 4월 10일에는 100마리가 되었으며, 계속 늘어나서 12월 31일에는 365마리가 되었지요.
새해 첫날부터 12월 31일까지 날마다 펭귄 때문에 벌어지는 좌충우돌 해프닝을 통해, 일상과 밀착된 수학 이야기를 흥미진진하게 들려줍니다. 펭귄이 점점 많아질수록 주인공 가족의 일상은 점점 더 수학과 가까워집니다. 처음엔 덧셈만으로도 펭귄을 정리할 수 있을 것 같더니, 나중에는 전자계산기까지 꺼내 들고 곱셈, 나눗셈까지 해 가며 펭귄을 정렬하고 먹이양을 계산해야 하는 지경에 이릅니다.
예를 들면 100마리가 되었을 때, 펭귄들이 먹어치우는 생선의 양은 1마리당 2.5파운드이므로 2.5 x 100은 총 250파운드가 되고, 하루에 드는 식비는 1파운드당 3달러이므로 3 x 250은 총 750달러가 듭니다.
온 집 안을 휘젓고 다니는 펭귄을 차곡차곡 쌓아 올리는 장면에서는 삼각형이나 정육면체 같은 도형에 대해서 넌지시 알려 주고, 144마리로 불어난 펭귄을 상자당 12마리씩 정리하는 장면에서는 12배수 개념에 대해서도 슬쩍 알려줍니다.
이처럼 이 그림책은 날마다 반복되는 우스꽝스러운 사건 속에, 능청스러우리만큼 자연스럽게 수학 이야기를 담아 놓고 있습니다. 단순히 숫자를 나열하거나 보여 주는 데 그치지 않고 일상과 밀접하게 연결시킴으로써 수학을 더욱 친숙하게 받아들일 수 있도록 유도합니다.
책 말미에는 누가 왜 팽귄을 보냈는지에 대한 궁금증이 풀리며, 웃기는 반전도 기다리고 있습니다.
