[ 책 소개 ]
* 2020년 Theodor Seuss Geisel Award 수상도서
국내에도 번역서가 출간된 베스트셀러 그림책인 "The Watermelon Seed(수박씨를 삼켰어!)"와 "Good Night Owl(잘 자, 올빼미야!)", 그리고 "Crunch, The Shy Dinosaur(크런치 부끄럼쟁이 공룡과 친해지는 책)"의 저자인 Greg Pizzoli가 최근에 만든 또 하나의 대표작입니다.
돼지 북호그는 책을 정말로 사랑합니다. 책 냄새를 맡는 것을 좋아하고, 손에서 느껴지는 촉감을 좋아하며, 특히 책 안의 그림들을 보는 것을 좋아합니다.
책 애호가인 북호그는 벼룩시장이나 야드세일에서 책을 구입하고, 쓰레기통에 버려진 책도 주웠으며, 서점에서 구입하기도 했습니다.
그런데 북호그에게는 숨겨진 비밀, 그것도 아주 큰 비밀이 있었는데, 사실 북호그는 책을 읽을 줄 모릅니다. 글을 배우지 못했던 것이죠. 수많은 책들에 파묻혀 지냅니다만, 북호그 단 한 권도 무슨 내용인지 알지 못합니다.
어느날 북호그는 새로운 책들을 찾기 위해 길거리를 돌아다니다가 "도서관"이라는 곳에 처음으로 들어가게 됩니다. 그리고 우연히 사서가 아이들에게 책을 읽어주는 "Storytime"에 참가하게 됩니다. 그동안 냄새, 촉감, 그림만으로 책을 좋아했던 북호그는 책의 내용을 알게 된 순간, 북호그에게 새로운 세상이 열렸습니다.
북호그는 더욱 책의 매력 속에 빠져들었고, 날마다 글을 읽는 법을 공부해서 마침내 스스로 책을 읽는 법을 터득하게 되었습니다. 무엇보다도 북호그를 기쁘게 해준 것은 도서관에서 수많은 책들을 아무때나 원하는 만큼 빌려볼 수 있다는 점이죠. 물론 대출 기한에 맞춰서 반납을 해야하기는 했지만요.
책 말미에 인쇄되어 있는 도서관의 "도서대출표"가 작가인 그렉 피졸리의 번뜩이는 재치를 엿볼 수 있게 해줍니다.
