나는 어려운 사건들을 척척 해결하는 유능한 사립탐정입니다. 어느날 6가 찾아와서 7이 9을 먹어치웠고, 지금은 자기를 뒤쫓고 있다며 도와달라고 하네요. 나는 6를 사무실에 있으라고 하고는 밖으로 나가서 사건의 진상을 캐기 시작했습니다.
나는 먼저 8을 만나보기로 했습니다. 8은 항상 7과 9 사이에 있어서 사건의 내막을 알고 있으리라 생각했지요. 하지만 내가 만난 8은 사실은 0이 벨트로 허리를 졸라매서 8처럼 보인 것 이었어요.
거리에서 만난 숫자와 문자들은 최근에 9이 어디론가 사라져서 9을 본 적이 없지만, 7은 절대로 9을 먹어치울 성격이 아니라고 하네요. 더군다나 7은 배를 타고 멀리 휴가를 떠났기 때문에 절대로 그런 일은 생길 수 없다고 합니다.
그런데 내 눈에 도로를 건너는 6가 눈에 띄었습니다. 6는 분명히 사무실에 있어야 하는데, 또 다른 6가 나타난 겁니다.
또 다른 6를 본 순간 나는 사건의 진상을 알게 되었습니다. 사무실로 돌아 온 나는 6를 거꾸로 뒤집었습니다. 그러자 6는 7이 먹어버렸다는 9이 되었지요.
9이 이런 거짓말을 한 이유는 7에 대해서 질투가 났기 때문이라고 하네요. 9은 존재감도 없고, 완벽한 숫자인 10 밑에 가려져서 제대로 대접도 받지 못하는데 반해, 7은 럭키 세븐, 세계 7대 불가사의, 백설공주와 일곱 난장이 등과 같이 세상 사람들의 주목을 받는 것이 너무나도 부러웠다는 겁니다. 그런데 9은 과연 본인의 주장대로 무시당하고 천대를 받기만 하는 숫자일까요? 나는 9에게 "cloud 9"이나 "whole nine yards"와 같이 매우 좋은 의미로 사용되는 경우들도 많다는 것을 설명해 줬습니다. 그리고 그때 마침 휴가에서 돌아 온 7을 만나게 되는데...

The intrepid investigator ignores all negatives, solving the mystery of the missing number by searching the streets and questioning a collection of verbose cartoon personalities (created digitally with Photoshop, colored pencil, and watercolor) featured prominently on the page. Readers will enjoy finding all of the math references hidden in the text and the art. The dialogue will gain appreciative groans up to the final moment, when Al is ready to resume his letter cases, because "they're A-OK in his book." VERDICT An A-1 purchase for those who love plays on words, mysteries, and humorous tales.
