인지그림책 작가로 유명한 프랑스 출신 일러스트레이터 겸 그래픽 디자이너인 야닉 코트의 대표작입니다. 그녀의 작품 중 국내에는 "나를 찾아봐, ABC 동물원"이라는 제목의 번역서가 출간되기도 했습니다.
이 책은 반댓말들에 대해 "하마"라는 소재로 재밌게 표현하고 있는 책입니다. 하마라는 한 종류의 동물을 이용해서 수많은 반댓말들의 의미를 이렇게 명확하게 전달하는 작가의 능력과 창의성에 감탄을 하게 됩니다.
예를 들면 "light"에서는 하마가 열기구풍선을 타고 하늘로 둥둥 떠오르고, 맞은편 페이지에는 이에 반대되는 "heavy"에서는 커다란 하마가 물 속에 꼬르륵 잠기는 모습을 보여줍니다.
"full"에서는 검은 하마가 페이지를 꽉 채우듯이 그려져 있고, 이에 반대되는 "empty"에서는 하얀 바탕 안에 하얀 하마가 음각으로 들어 있어서 그야말로 텅 빈 이미지를 저절로 떠오르게 합니다.
심지어 "soft"에서는 하마가 부드러운 실제 천으로 만들어졌고, 'rough"에서는 하마가 거친 천으로 만들어져서, 손으로 그 질감을 느끼면서 촉감으로 soft와 rough의 의미를 깨달을 수 있습니다.
