깊은 숲 속에서 살고 있는 악당 곰은 커다란 파이를 만들고 있습니다. 밀가루 반죽으로 만든 파이의 껍질(크러스트)은 완성되었지만, 그 안에 채워 넣을 속재료는 준비가 되어 있지 않네요. 곰은 속재료를 구하기 위한 흉계를 꾸밉니다.
집 밖으로 나가 큰 소리로 "엄청난 파이! 엄청나 파이!"라고 큰 소리로 외치고, 동물들에게 속재료를 구한다고 알렸습니다.
생쥐는 베리들을 구해오고,
다람쥐는 헤이즐넛을 주워오고,
오소리는 꿀을 들고오고,
수달은 연어를 잡아왔습니다.
충분한 속재료가 준비되었는데도, 곰은 여전히 부족하다고 하네요. 그 부족분을 채워주는 것은 바로 속재료들을 들고 온 동물들이었어요. 곰은 속재료들로 채워진 파이 안에 생쥐, 다람쥐, 오소리, 수달을 집어 넣고는 파이 뚜껑을 닫아 버렸어요. 동물들은 파이 안에서 몸부림치다가, 파이 밑바닥을 뚫고 발 들이 쑥 나와버렸네요. 이제 파이 속 동물들은 필사적으로 도망쳤어요. 그리고 곰은 파이 뒤를 쫓아가다가 밀대를 밟는 바람에 미끄러져서 호수에 풍덩 빠져 버리고 말았지요.
동물들은 모여서 맛있게 파이를 구워 먹고, 파이를 빼앗긴 곰은 혼자서 쓸쓸하게 버섯을 구워먹는 장면으로 이 책은 끝납니다.
문장들은 라임으로 되어 있어서 운율에 맟춰 큰 소리로 읽으면 더욱 재미있고 신이 납니다.
유머와 반전이 있는 재미있는 그림책입니다.
