주인공 에이다는 아프리카계 미국인 여자아이입니다. 더욱이 태어나 세 살 때까지는 말을 전혀 하지 못하지요. 유색 인종에 여자이고, 말도 늦었던 에이다는 보통은 남자가 하는 일이라고 여겨졌던 자연 과학 분야에서 소외받던 여성들을 상징한다고 볼 수 있습니다. 오랜 과학의 역사 속에서 여성은 능력을 가졌더라도 남성에 비해 활동한 수가 매우 적으며, 지금까지도 과학과 공학 분야에서는 여전히 성별 격차가 존재하고 있지요.
작가는 과학자로서 잠재력을 지닌 이 작은 여자아이를 응원하듯, 이름을 ‘에이다 마리’로 지었습니다. ‘에이다’는 수학자이자 최초의 프로그래머였던 영국의 과학자 ‘에이다 러브레이스’ 이름에서 따온 것이고, ‘마리’는 프랑스의 물리학자이고 화학자이며, 방사성 원소인 폴로늄과 라듐을 발견해 노벨 화학상을 받기도 한 ‘마리 퀴리’ 이름에서 따온 것이지요. 자신이 좋아하는 것이 무엇인지 알고, 적극적으로 탐구하며 미래의 직업으로 발전시키는 일에 있어서 성별이나 인종에 구애받는 일이 없어야겠지요. 무한한 가능성을 지닌 우리 아이들이 사회적 편견을 넘어 무엇이든 해낼 수 있으며, 반드시 꿈을 이룰 것이라는 용기를 주는 이야기입니다.
에이다는 세 살이 될 때까지 말을 전혀 하지 못했어요. 그 대신 주변을 유심히 관찰하며 세상에 대한 호기심을 무럭무럭 키워 나갔지요. 부모님은 다른 아이들보다 말이 늦은 에이다를 걱정하면서도 언젠가는 말을 술술 할 수 거라고 믿어 주었어요. 드디어! 정확히 세 살이 되던 날, 에이다는 뱉어 낸 첫 번째 말은 바로 '왜요?'라는 질문이었답니다. 그 뒤로 에이다는 '뭐예요?', '어떻게요?', '언제요?' 등 끝없이 질문을 쏟아 내기 시작했어요. 부모님은 이 호기심 많은 아이를 위해 여러모로 애를 썼지요. 그러나 에이다의 엉뚱한 질문은 말썽이 되기 일쑤였답니다. 실험을 한다며 학교에서 자주 난장판을 일으키고, 집에서는 급기야 고양이를 세탁기에 넣는 실험까지 감행한 에이다! 결국 부모님은 "안 돼!" 하며 크게 화를 냈어요. 벌을 받게 된 에이다는 이 대단한 말썽을 과연 멈출 수 있을까요?
