어느 날 못된 악마가 거울을 하나 만들었습니다. 뭐든지 다 흉측하게 보이는 거울이었습니다. 악마는 거울을 하늘로 옮기다가 그만 떨어뜨려 깨뜨립니다. 산산조각 난 거울은 먼지처럼 떠다니다 사람들의 눈과 마음으로 파고듭니다. 그러면 사람들은 차갑고 잔인하게 변해 버렸습니다. 어느 작은 도시에 카이라는 남자아이와 게르다라는 여자아이가 살았습니다. 둘은 아주 친한 친구여서 두 집 가운데 있는 장미 정원에서 함께 놀며 사이좋게 지냈습니다. 그러던 어느 날, 카이의 눈과 마음에 악마의 거울 조각이 박히고 맙니다. 그 날부터 카이는 못된 아이로 변해 갔습니다. 그해 겨울, 카이가 눈밭에서 썰매를 타며 노는데, 눈의 여왕이 나타나 카이를 눈의 여왕의 성으로 데려가 버립니다. 봄이 되자 게르다는 카이를 찾아 길을 떠납니다. 요술쟁이 할머니 집에 잡혀 지내기도 하고, 카이를 닮은 왕자를 찾아가기도 합니다. 그러다 그만 산적에게 잡혀 산적 소굴로 가게 됩니다. 게르다는 산적 소굴에 사는 비둘기로부터 카이가 눈의 여왕의 성에 있다는 얘기를 듣습니다. 게르다는 즉시 카이를 찾아 눈의 여왕의 성으로 떠납니다. 눈의 여왕의 성에 이르러, 게르다는 눈의 여왕의 호위병들과 한판 싸움을 벌입니다. 이 싸움에서 카이를 향한 게르다의 사랑의 힘이 천사로 변해 여왕의 호위병들을 무찌르고, 마침내 게르다는 카이를 만납니다. 게르다의 뜨거운 눈물에 카이 마음속에 박혔던 거울 조각마저 녹아 내립니다. 또 카이가 게르다를 보고 눈물을 흘리자 카이 눈 속에 박혔던 거울 조각도 빠져 나옵니다. 순간 '영원'이라는 얼음 글자도 맞추어집니다. 게르다와 카이는 손을 잡고 옛날 자기들의 집으로 돌아옵니다. 어느새 둘은 아이에서 숙녀와 청년으로 자라나 있습니다. 둘은 함께 기쁨의 노래를 부릅니다.

Andersen's tale has been considerably abridged to fit into a picture-book format, and the most obvious references to Christianity have been removed. The retelling still emphasizes the struggle between good and evil, as it relates Gerda's quest to rescue her friend Kai from the clutches of the Snow Queen. Ibatoulline's sumptuous paintings perfectly capture the tale's high drama. Appropriately, the first glimpse of the two friends is from the snowy rooftops of their town, though they're snug and warm indoors. Then a splinter from the evil troll's mirror enters the room on a gust of wind, and Kai's heart is pierced. The dramatic moment is seen from above as a whirl of white invades the room. The next scene finds Kai, scared yet stubbornly clinging to his sled as the Snow Queen's sleigh whisks him away into the night. As Kai falls under her enchantment, the story turns to Gerda and her efforts to bring him back. The gentle, wistful child's strength lies in her certitude and innocent love, and she wins over everyone she meets. Whether it's in his meticulously crafted landscapes or in the emotive faces of his characters, Ibatoulline's paintings are eye-catching and memorable. Another outstanding version of a classic story.

In this abridged version of Andersen’s original fairy tale, young Gerda and Kai have long been best friends, but Kai becomes cruel when tiny slivers of a cursed mirror pierce his eye and his heart. Soon the Snow Queen takes him away to her home, and Gerda sets out on a quest to save him. She endures many trials as she travels to the Snow Queen’s palace, where she finds Kai and frees him. No source is given for the translation or abridgment. Lacking the religious content woven through Andersen’s tale, this edition is more accessible to contemporary children. While the telling is considerably shorter than the original, it is somewhat longer than most picture-book texts. The episodic story moves along well, though, and its length gives viewers plenty of time to linger over the detailed illustrations. Skillfully rendered and beautifully composed, the acrylic gouache paintings create a series of impressive images that many readers will enjoy.
