이 책의 작가인 엘리샤 쿠퍼는 미국 타임지가 선정한 10대 아동작가 중 한명이며,『굿나잇 산책(A Goodnight Walk)』『아이스크림』『매직은 생각이 대담해(Magic Thinks Big)』『댄스!(Dance!)』 그리고 『뉴욕에서의 일년(A Year in New York)』 같은 아동도서를 지은 베스트셀러 그림책 작가입니다. 그의 작품 중『Dance!』는 2001년 뉴욕 타임스 최고의 그림책으로 선정되었으며, 『Big Cat, Little Cat』로 2018년 칼데콧 아너 상을 수상했습니다. 칼데콧 아너 상을 받을 당시 “흑백의 선을 효과적으로 표현하여 삶의 순환성을 안정적으로 잘 보여 주었다”는 심사평을 받았습니다. 이 책은 국내에서는『큰 고양이, 작은 고양이』라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되었습니다.
큰 고양이는 작은 고양이에게 언제 먹고, 언제 마시고, 어디를 가고, 어떻게 놀고, 언제 쉬는지를 ‘보여 줍니다’. 큰 고양이가 ‘보여 준다’는 것은 ‘함께 그 일을 한다’는 뜻입니다. ‘보여 준다’는 것은 말과 글로 가르치는 것과 다릅니다. 큰 고양이는 품격 높은 삶, 편안한 삶을 살려면 어떤 삶을 살아야 하는지를 가르치지 않았습니다. 그저 고양이로서 먹고 자고 쉬고 놀면서 고양이의 본성을 잃지 않고 살아가는 법, 그리고 누군가와 교감하며 살아가는 법을 몸으로, 생활로 보여 줍니다. 그야말로 삶의 전범인 셈이지요.
그러면서 작은 고양이와 함께 요리도 하고 단장도 하고 사냥도 하고 계획도 세웁니다. 그리고 작은 고양이와 함께 날마다 5분 동안 뒤엉켜 뒹굴고, 함께 꿈을 꿉니다. 현실과 이상을 함께 하면서 둘은 서로 닮아갑니다. 두 고양이의 모습을 살펴보다 보면 자연스레 가정의 모습이 떠오릅니다. 우리가 나답다는 것을 확인하고 확신하는 곳이야말로 가정, 바로 집이 아닐까요.
세월이 흐르면서 큰 고양이는 늙은 고양이가 되고, 이제 늙은 큰 고양이는 다시는 돌아올 수 없는 저 세상으로 영원히 떠납니다. 작은 고양이는 큰 상실감을 느끼지만, 큰 고양이가 떠난 빈자리는 또 다른 작은 고양이의 온기로 채워집니다. 작은 고양이는 이제 큰 고양이가 되었고, 새로 들어온 작은 고양이에게 자신이 터득한 삶의 지혜를 알려주면서 다시 의지하고 사랑하는 관계를 키워갑니다...
