조그맣고 사랑스러운 프랑스 마을 한 가운데 시립 동물원이 있습니다. 그리고 이 동물원에는 행복한 사자 한 마리가 살고 있습니다. 마을 사람들은 모두 행복한 사자를 사랑했으며, 매일 그를 볼 때마다 반갑게 인사를 했습니다. 어느날 동물원 관리인이 실수로 사자우리의 문을 열어놓는 일이 발생합니다. 사자는 매일 동물원을 방문해 주는 사람들을 위해, 이번에는 자기가 나가서 사람들에게 반가운 인사를 건네줘야 겠다고 생각합니다.
하지만 사자가 어스렁거리면서 시내를 돌아다니자, 사자와 마주친 사람들은 너무 놀라서 기절을 하거나 비명을 지르고, 심지어는 들고 있던 장바구니를 사자 얼굴에 던져버리기 까지 했습니다. 길거리에서 행진 중이던 악대들도 사자를 보고는 혼비백산해서 도망을 쳤지요. 결국 마을은 인적이 없는 텅빈 도로로 변하게 되고, 사자를 잡기 위해 소방관들이 고압 호스를 들고 나타납니다. 소방관들이 조심스럽게 접근해서 사자에게 고압의 소방수를 쏘기 직전에 뜻밖의 일이 발생하네요...
국내에는 "행복한 사자"라는 제목으로 번역서가 출간되어 있습니다.
