[ 책 소개 ]
여러 종류의 동물들이 등장해서 사람처럼 행동하고 생활하는 모습이 그려진 책입니다. '개들의 마라톤대회'에서 개들이 운동화를 신고 달리고, 돼지들이 모자를 쓰고 연극하며, 양이 샤워를 하고 사슴이 볼링하는 모습을 재미있게 보여줍니다. 또한 암탉이 수영을 하고, 스컹크는 스쿠터를 타며, 개구리들이 데이트를 합니다.
이렇듯이 동물들이 사람처럼 운동하고 행동하는 것들이 현실세계에서는 불가능하지만 상상 속에서는 가능합니다. 양들이 구두를 팔고, 노새가 그림을 그리고, 오리가 자전거를 타고, 황소가 비행기를 몰며 하늘을 나는 일도 상상 속에서는 충분히 일어날 수 있지요.
마지막 남겨진 물음, "....tell me what you see? It's your dream..."과 상상의 나래를 펴고 꿈꾸는 듯한 아이의 표정은 커다란 의미를 담고 있습니다. 이렇듯 현실에서는 일어날 수 없지만 '꿈'이란 것은 무슨 일이든 가능하게 합니다.
이 책은 짧고 단순하지만 완벽한 문장과 생동감 넘치는 그림이 잘 조화를 이루고 있습니다. 단순한 문장의 반복으로 자칫 지루해 질 수 있는 내용을 재미있는 그림으로 잘 나타내어 책을 읽는 즐거움을 더 하지요.
작가인 Laura Numeroff도 밝혔듯이 스컹크들이 캡 모자를 쓰고 스쿠터를 타는 모습은 굉장히 재미있습니다. 뿐만 아니라 염소가 파자마에 슬리퍼 차림으로 면도하는 장면이나 수탉이 땀을 뻘뻘 흐리며 헬스를 하는 모습, 소들이 치마를 입고 신나게 춤을 추는 것만 보아도 이 책의 그림들을 느낄 수가 있습니다. 아이와 함께 한 문장씩 읽어나가면서 그림을 자세히 감상하세요. 정확한 문장 구조도 배울 수 있고, 위트 넘치는 그림들을 보며 상상력도 키워나갈 것입니다.

[ 작가소개 ]
이 책의 글을 쓴 Laura Numeroff는 1953년 미국 뉴욕에서 출생하였습니다. 신문사 미술 스탭이었던 아버지와 고등학교 선생님이던 어머니 사이에서 미술, 음악, 책들에 둘러싸여 자랐습니다. 책 읽기, 피아노 치기, 노래 부르기, 춤추기, 우표 모으기가 취미였던 그녀는 그림 그리기와 책 읽기, 이야기 만들어 내기 등을 좋아하여 자기 자신에 대한 이야기를 쓰기 시작했다고 합니다. 어린 시절 Kay Thompson의 『Eloise』, E.B.White의 『Stuart Little』, Dr. Seuss의 『The Cat in the Hat』등의 책들을 좋아하여 많은 영향을 끼쳤다고 합니다.

A jaunty, rhymed text provides a litany of unlikely scenarios- sheep in the shower, hens in the swimming pool-some of which work better than others. It's Mathieu's wacky and inventive illustrations that really carry the show. His expressive animals lift weights, dangle off diving boards, and cavort in a variety of crazy outfits. Kids will enjoy the silliness, even if the book isn't as much fun as John Cameron's If Mice Could Fly (Atheneum, 1979; o.p.). Teachers will appreciate the final page, which invites readers to "tell me what you see," making the title a spirited springboard for creative activities. Useful, but not especially memorable.

"And pigs don't wear hats/And dresses look silly/On Siamese cats," begins this cheerful litany, by the author of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (1985), of ridiculous impossibilities- -the last few seen from a different perspective after Numeroff suggests, "Now just close your eyes/And draw with your mind...tell me what you see? It's your dream--not mine!" Using soft pencil and watercolor against a white ground that dramatizes the lively activity, Mathieu, a frequent illustrator of Sesame Street books, visualizes such unlikely scenes as skunks on scooters, a skiing yak taking a header, or gnus building a "gnu" house in a spirited, comical style that's sure to appeal to the preschool crowd as much as the deliciously silly text does.
