A feisty Irish girl sets out to save her village from starvation. "Visually and verbally inventive in its details and its broader storytelling, this one is a shiny shamrock," said PW.
Children's Literature
Katie O'Sullivan's storytelling ability is the only thing that can save her family from the hangman's rope after they are caught trying to rescue the local witch's favorite horse from the king's stable. Kate make a deal with the king for him to let them go free if she can show, through her stories, that they were in a worse spot in the story than they are right now. He agrees. The stories are rich with the ingredients of Irish tales: magical fairy folk, leprechauns, sea serpents, caterwauling cats, one-eyed giants and a baby who is rescued by Kate's father. One guess who that baby turned out to be. Talbott's artwork is as buoyant and dazzling as his storytelling. This is a great read-aloud. Don't miss it!
