왕과 왕비는 월요일, 화요일, 수요일... 매일마다 소년을 식사에 초대했고, 그 때마다 소년은 "May I bring a friend?" 똑같은 요청을 합니다. 왕과 왕비의 허락을 받아서 데려온 친구는 하마(월요일), 원숭이(화요일), 코끼리(수요일), 사자(목요일), 물개(금요일) 등 모두 동물입니다. 그리고 주말인 토요일, 왕과 왕비는 역시 소년을 초대했지만 이번에는 소년이 왕과 왕비를 초대했지요. 왕과 왕비가 초대받아서 간 곳은... 바로 동물원이었습니다. 동물원에는 용감한 왕과 아름다운 왕비를 찬양하는 깃발이 우리마다 휘날립니다...
왕과 왕비의 너그러움, 그리고 동물들이 일으키는 예상 외의 소동 등 어린 아이들에게 즐거움을 주는 내용들이 4행으로 된 운율이 들어 맞는 문장으로 실려 있어서 큰 소리로 박자를 마추면서 읽으면 저절로 흥이 납니다.
공손하게 초대를 하거나 요청을 하는 표현법, 일요일부터 토요일까지 각 요일, 동물들의 이름 등에 대해서 배울 수 있습니다.

The King and Queen are most gracious hosts to a certain little boy--and any friend of his is a friend of theirs. When he brings a giraffe to tea, the King doesn't blink an eye and says, "Hello. How do you do?" and the Queen merely exclaims, "Well! Fancy meeting you!"
