12월 21은 1년 중 해가 가장 낮게 드는 날이고, 낮시간이 가장 짧은 날입니다. 우리나라에서는 "동지"라고 부르는 12월 21일을 인류는 오래 전부터 관측하고 기념해 왔습니다. 이 책에서는 세계 각 지역에서 역사적으로 동지를 어떻게 측정하고 어떻게 기념해 왔는지를 파스텔풍의 아름다운 그림과 함께 보여줍니다.
5천년전, 이집트에서는 지평선에 지는 석양해가 가장 남쪽에 있을 때가 동지이고 이날이 지나면 낮의 길이가 점점 길어진다는 것을 발견했습니다. 그리고 천문학자들은 사원에 동지날에만 햇살이 통과하는 긴 구멍을 만들어서 그 틈으로 햇살이 비치면 그날부터는 낮시간이 점점 길어진다는 것을 알 수 있었습니다.
3천년 전 중국에서는 정오에 그림자가 가장 길게 비추는 날이 동지날이라는 것을 발견했으며,
2천년 전 로마에서는 동지날에는 문밖에 상록수 잎으로 만든 녹색의 화환을 걸면서 앞으로 봄이 올 것을 미리 축하했습니다.
이 책에서는 이외에도 영국과 에이레, 스웨덴, 잉카 등 세계 각 지역에서 동지를 어떻게 기념하는지 수록하고 있습니다.
책 말미에는 태양 주위를 도는 지구의 자전축 때문에 동지를 포함해서 지구의 계절이 어떻게 변하는지를 과학적으로 보여주며, 동지날을 전후해서 낮의 길이와 그림자의 길이를 재고 기록할 수 있는 실험차트도 수록되어 있습니다.

The remaining pages feature more complete "Solstice Facts," four simple experiments, two party suggestions, and a short but up-to-date list for further reading. While appealing to a younger audience, this treatment combines the cultural approach of Ellen Jackson's The Winter Solstice (Millbrook, 1994) and the activities of Sandra Markle's Exploring Winter (Atheneum, 1984; o.p.).
